IIRC, in gear 5, 70mph, it's at (ca. 2900rpm) with my configuration.
(M47, 3.91:1 final drive I think).

940 Fuel Consumption
Given the sizeable range of engines that have been put under the bonnet of the 940 during its long life it is a bit disconcerting to try to work out how the general consumption data can be helpful to me unless it clearly indicates which engine configuration is appropriate, which all sounds a bit anorak if not train spotter.
For my part, I would be interested to know what other 2.3 HPT [with auto] owners get to see if mine is roughly in the ball park or I need to spend some time fettling it. It has stimulated a good debate though which must be good! |

There's my problem then. My gear box is too low ratio. I wonder if it can be swapped, and even if it would be worth the effort, or whether my money would be better spent just buying a turbo version.

Don't swap the gearbox. Fit a higher ratio back axle/dif.

B230 MPT (badged as a "Classic" therefore LPT, got a factory boost gauge therefore HPT, so split the difference for a Medium-Pressure Turbo) with 5-speed manual box.
Overall average is 28.89mpg over 59k miles since I bought the Exxon Valdez. I'm reasonably happy with that. I've probably had better transient figures but the ones I quote are based on fill-to-fill and trip-mileometer recordings.

I didn't know that was an option. Thanks for the tip, but...

I'm glad this thread happened, because I love the 940, but didn't really know much about the variations. I guess the slightly newer LPT one is more the car for me. Given that Helga is not in perfect condition, it seems sensible to start off with a better starting point rather than spending loads of time and money on Helga. |
