if that fails it could be the starter motor(if there is a high whine when you turn the ignition it would be the starter motor solenoid).try tapping the starter motor body with a hammer-gently mind!!!

there has been a whining noise coming from the power steering pump area for quite a few months now but i've never got any time or cash to get it fixed. It makes that noise all the time when the engine is running and goes in time with the engine revs, its getting a bit annoying actually. girlfriend says she can hear my car coming down the road now cause it sounds different to all the other cars! Any ideas what that would be, its not caused any problems

I will have a look at mine in the morning and check the GB to body one. One end will mostly be fixed to the inner wing. The one from the battery is pretty obvious, one end on the -ve terminal and follow it to the body or wherever else it leads. Clean the end of the wire and around where it bolts on to.

Hi,
Given that adding a good earthing seems to solve the problem I would say that the best next course of action would be to remove and clean all the engine and body earth straps. Undo bolts/nuts and clean the strap and body/engine contacts and reconnect them. Also do the same for the battery to body earth strap. Maybe even check the cost of anew strap to the battery and replace it. If after this, you still experience the issue, regularly or intermittently then maybe the alternator? Once the starter has got you going it should not be stopping you en route. That points back to earthing.. Des. . .

right i'm home from work now and i'm going to have another bash, i checked the battery term at lunch time and gave it a clean but didn't do the trick. When i'm looking for the earth straps do i need to go under the car and look? all i can see is a blue cable running off the term which disappears downwards and out of sight

right i think i've sorted it chaps, i've taken the battery out, taken the platform out it sits on and low and behold the blue cable was snapped where it joins from the gearbox to the body mount. Because i work all week and need my car i can't get to a garage and purchase a new cable just yet so i've undone the mounting nut and pushed the cable (I've cut the plastic coating off first!!) under the metal plate that presses against the car and tightened the nut up again. It has done the trick and the cables are nice and secure, best still, the car starts perfectly. I know this is only a temporary fix but i think it'll do now. Thanks very much for all your help, it has mean't alot

Oh, i forgot about the noise i meantioned earlier. It is coming from the pump thing that is next to the cam belt, not sure if its power steering pump or not but it doesn't seem to affect the car at all. The noise goes with the revs to the engine, the higher i rev the louder it gets, any ideas, may as well try and fix that while i'm on a roll!!!!
