Eurocar parts do a continental belt and tensioner (very good make); don't forget to consider the water pump (these are known to let go at around 190000 miles which will strip the belt. It's not a hard job to do on your drive. Regards, Jon

Always use genuine volvo parts they are the best . When this engine came out vw had belt problems , volvo sorted it it out on their engines by changing to a higher quality belt . you wont get this buying elsewhere ...

I've just had the timing belt changed on my V70 2.5D, they fitted the belt and tensioner kit, crank oil seal and auxiliary tensioner (at a cost of £285 all in.)
The car seems to be running fine and isn't making any strange noises, however the engine management light is on. I noticed straight away and the mechanic came out and plugged his machine in, it came up with a timing error. He cleared the fault and said it should be ok, but the light came back on again on the way home. I haven't taken it back yet as they were closing when I picked the car up, I will be taking it back tomorrow but I just wanted to ask people's opinions on here as well. Will the car be safe to drive while this light is on? Is it likely to cause any damage if the timing is slightly out? And should they be able to put it right quickly and easily, ie in a few minutes while I wait, or will they have to strip it all down again? Any help / advice much appreciated! |

They will have set the timing with the pulley marks which gets the timing somewhere near but the final dynamic timing needs to be done with software.

Hi Lewis,
Did you ever get any info on Volvomax ? I tried phoning and also emailed but got no response. I need to replace my front and rear discs and don't want to pay main stealer rates ! |

If the timing is far enough out to throw the eml up you may have cold start issues in the morning!
Good luck John |

Right, here's an update on this saga!
Car started just fine on Thursday morning. Drove into town to drop my girlfiend off at work, and then back over to the garage. EML was still lit but car was driving perfectly. Left it at the garage so they could sort out the light. Went to pick it up in the afternoon, they told me that they had adjusted the timing by a very small amount, and now the light wasn't coming on. Great, I thought. So I took my key back, got in the car, and... It won't start. So i got the mechanic out again, he eventually got it started but it sounded absolutely terrible, like the engine was about to blow up. Left it with them again. The next day (yesterday) i went to pick it up again, he said they had now replaced the belt and tensioner on the other side of the engine (pump belt?) And now it was ok. I took it for a drive, it sounded fine and went as well as it always had done. So I was happy, until this morning! Took 5 or 6 attempts to get it started. Up until now it has always fired up on the first turn of the key, but now it's taking ages to get going. Once started it's fine, still runs and sounds good, and the EML hasn't come on. As far as I know, my mechanic hasn't done any of the software programming that was mentioned earlier. Could this be the answer? As I said, the EML isn't on any more and car is running fine, it's just the starting issue now. |

Yes, this is most likely the problem.
The timing has to be set dynamically (with the engine running at 1200 rpm) using diagnostic equipment. What year is the car? |
