Why has it taken at least 3 people, one of them twice, to convince you of this?

If you've ever suffered worn drop link bushes on a FWD car you'll know what it feels like and it's not pleasant!

Removing the drop links completely will be much worse and wouldn't alter the vibration during braking. The purpose of the ARB is to minimise body roll during cornering which in turn through weight transfer and other things, helps prevent wheelspin when pulling away and improves roadholding through corners, not to mention keeping the body flatter through the corner aka reducing body roll.
It hasn't taken 3 people. I misinterpreted your first message "No, it's not, disconnecting the drop links would cause excess body roll and potentially wheelspin when pulling away and reduced grip in some corners" as meaning no it's not a ridiculous idea.

Clearly I've experienced it as they've just been replaced.

in fairness he said 'is it ridiculous' and the reply was 'no...'

so .. yeah I had to read it a few times to check the meaning.. just a silly misunderstanding eh

on the other hand it is a bit of a daft idea in the first place lol

so let's just forget it and not descend into chaos

To clarify - rwo questions were asked. First, is the brake reaction bar/tie-bar/radius arm the anti-roll bar?

No, it's not.

Second question - would it be a ridiculous idea to disconnect the drop links and see if the problem goes away?

.....disconnecting the drop links would cause excess body roll and potentially wheelspin when pulling away and reduced grip in some corners.

The answer was NOT no it wouldn't be ridiculous, the answer was no the tie-bar etc isn't the anti-roll bar.

You didn't say you'd changed the brakes (see your post below). You said it needed new brakes...

Juddering steering caused by warped discs is common. It may not be the sole culprit, but there's a high probability that the juddering is relating to the discs all the same.

I'll start by saying the car does need new disks and pads, but I don't believe this to be the cause. I think it's suspension/steering related.

I have a judder through the steering wheel/chassis when breaking from motorway speeds. This has appeared after replacing ABS rings and drop links on both sides of the front axle. Before that I had problems with the ABS kicking in on corners, and knocking drop links, but no juddering.

I have had a similar problem before which turned out to be a track rod end, but I've jacked the car up and can't find any play when wobbling the wheel left/right or top/bottom.

Any ideas?

EDIT: It also had a new CV boot as I damaged the old one doing the work mentioned. There's grease on the inside of the wheel which could maybe cause some balancing problems? But I wouldn't have thought this would be apparent under braking only.

Ive only ever experience juddering to be caused by warped discs or wheel balance.

Thats not to say it couldnt be sommat else though, the above is my experience.

Does the judder come with a strange sort of vibration/noise (hum type) too? if so, that would rule out wheel balance and point to disc and/or area.

Like Laird Scooby said, swapping the wheels is a quick and simple test its the 1st thing to try, it may make it worse (if rears are OOB too) or better.

As counterintuitive as it may seem, on a previous car (V70 TDI) I eventually tracked brake shudder to warped REAR discs. I had symptoms similar to yours and assumed the worn front discs were at fault - and after buying a full set of front and back discs and pads changed discs and pads on the front but it made no difference. When I eliminated as much of the front suspension/braking/steering components as I could and found nothing, I changed the rear discs and pads (not because I thought they were the problem but because I had them) and the shudder stopped. Google it - a lot of people have experienced the same thing.
