By the way....further to my earlier post I see you have opted for the "plush" version which is slightly down on power compared to your other options. looking at the price lists you could have a 170 bhp vRS for less than the Laurin & Klement. Lease prices and company rules may dictate otherwise but maybe worth a look.

it is a very personal choice. I love the 1 series, but with two kids (ages?) you will struggle with back seat space and will find the boot restrictive (although I did manage to fit 3 scouts and their weekend gear for a camp in one a good few years ago!). I wouldnt have the Insignia unless mots of my driving was on the motorway and i just wanted comfort.
I had a Mazda 5 (well, the better half did!) and i wasnt that impressed - decent chassis and kit but it always felt a bit cheap and cheerful (and it was top spec!) and the engine wasnt the best. On that basis I would eliminate the 6. The Passat is a great family car but not very exciting. The Golf is more fun but not as practical. The Octy is based on the Golf platform but made to fit the size gap between the Golf and Passat. On that basis it may just be the perfect alternative. But as you asked, I would take the Golf all day. And given i have had enough experiences of the faster versions and hate giving the govt my hard earned cash, I'd take a more tax effiicient 2.0 TDI with Bluemotion technology in GT trim. |

Hello all,
The VRS isn't available! And I'm not going to test the 1 series as I'll drive it, love it and get it then regret it every time I get the kids and their stuff in it! |

I prefer my Octavia to the 1 sieries i had before. The Skodas sound system is just superb compared to the BMW std fit. It has a 6 disc changer in the head unit that plays mp3s also has an sd slot and an aux socket in the cubby box.
It will fit 6 foot doors in the back just by dropping the seat. I have a 1.8 TSi elegance and love it. 160bhp 1.8 Turbo petrol and around 36mpg not taking it steady. May be worth a look if its in budget. |

how old are the kids and how often do you use the car for the daily drudgery duties? If they are still in pushchairs and car seats, forget it. If they are walking and on boosters, then there is enough space most of the time. And for the drive and engine you would learn to manage!

Hello,
So after three tests and a day of cars I decided that Golf GTD was the best choice of the three - it was the best of the three to drive! But then I drove past BMW. Whoops. The winner is the 123d M Sport 5 door. Simple awesome to drive! |

It was better to drive than the Octavia and great for dual carriageway/ motorway driving but it disappointed on country roads and the interior was very well specced but still lacked a little. The Golf GTD was a STEP UP in class and to drive - a good option all round really!
The BMW was very well appointed (range topping spec) and it was simply exhilarating on A and B roads! |
