Well BOAC went on strike while we were there and so we had to fly to the USA and come home from there!!

So we only flew on a VC10 for the outward leg.

Bad news was we did not have US visa's at the time and so we were not made particularly welcome by US immigration.

Wow, from disabling passenger airbags to VC10 seat configuration was the VC10 a direct decendant of the XC60....? Interestingly the Trident was the first commercial aircraft to install fully automated landing by computer. Whatever happened to British innovation?

To bring the 2 topics back together, Virgin atlantic's 747 upper class seats are SIDEWAYS facing AND (here's the good bit) they've got airbags fitted !
How's about that then, as Sir Jimmy would have said.

the biggest thing i've found out whilst searching about this is how far behind the uk seems to be when it comes to child seats. it appears more advanced countries keep rearward facing seats until children are about 4 yrs old. this is due to the enormous strain a front on collision puts onto a childs neck when they are secured in a front facing child seat. it doesn't mater where they sit. in the uk, it's nigh on impossible to buy a rearward seat for a child over 13kg (under 3 yrs old).
Really?
you havent been looking in the right places , Volvo being world leaders in safety have had them for years ..

Might be worth checking this site

http://www.rearfacing.co.uk/index.php

lots of seats that meet your requirements and that go all the way up to 25kg

The airbag is necessary only because the seat is sideways facing , so not needed in the forward facing seats of economy.
