Default Mudflaps

I fitted front and rear Volvo OE mudflaps in an hour. It is necessary to drill and fit the plastic 'popper' fittings, without them the mudflaps move too much even when 'wiggled' by hand. The sill area and rear valance do seem to have stayed a bit cleaner since fitting. I like the look better too.

Yes they are fairly rigid and TBO I did think they might not last long, but as you say price wise I thought they were worth a punt.
I'll see when I get round to fitting them.

Do you need to drill the extra holes in the steel or just in the plastic?

I couldn't decide to install mudflaps or not and I wasn't sure if they will work as described.

I found on the Internet a lot of opinions pro and con.
Pro are mostly people who spend some money and don't want to admit that is was mistake.
Con are mostly people who never had mudflaps and don't want to spent extra money for them.

So I decided to install my own mudflaps to check how they work.

You can see that protected area it is not a big area, just a few cm after mudflaps.

During winter time they are only for decoration.

It would be nice to see some other pictures showing how mudflaps are doing their job. Mine wasn't an original Volvo mudflaps.
It could help to make a decision.

I had front and rear mudflaps thrown in on my last XC60 having been very disappointed with how dirty the car became very quickly after washing it going on my usual routes. Would I have them again? Maybe on the front, but they were not as effective as I was hoping they would be.

The Volvo supplied mudflaps are not plain flaps but have a moulded shape with a rim around the edge. Apart from the flaps being stronger, the aerodynamics will be different to a plain flap. So I wouldnt recommend making your own.
I find the Volvo mudflaps work well enough with very little thrown up on the side of the car. One limitation is that as they don't stick out sideways much, there is the possibility of spray bypassing the outside one when cornering.

Bought and fitted a front and rear moulded set from eBay (£37.00 + p&p for both). They appear to do the job and are of good quality material - no too rigid as mentioned previously on this thread.

Yes, you do have to drill holes for one extra screw at the base of each flap. It is only a pilot hole into plastic, not into steel.
Hi Graham,

You mentioned you had to drill and fit the plastic 'popper' fittings otherwise the mudflaps wiggle too much.

Do you need to drill in the steel (body) of the car, or do you only need to drill a hole in the plastic of the mudflaps?

If only in the mudflaps, how do they keep the mudflaps in place than? What is the use of the 'popper' fittings?

In the manual it sais that the front fittings need to stay popped out and the rear fittings need be popped/pushed in completely. Do you know why that is?

Thanks in advance for your answer(s).

Best regards,
Jurgen

You have to drill. I bought original mudflaps off ebay and installed them myself. The drilling is into the plastic portion and not into any steel. Its an easy job - about 10 mins for the first mudflap and progressive faster afterwards as confidence increase ..

Mine all went in. Had the flaps installed for over a year now and there's been no problems with rigidity, falling off etc. The other thing is that they do work. I don't get the dirty mud splashes anymore..

I fitted genuine fronts to my XC60, waste of money, if I were to buy them again I'd get some bigger ones from HK.
