Try a Passat estate, the 2L 140bhp is fantastic. A colleague at work is changing his 3 year old 75K for a new one and another employee is taking it off him for £8600 (price quoted by leasing company). This car is immaculate and has been cherished, you'd thought it done 10K and not 75K. My point is, the Passat is a cracking car, plenty of power, VERY economical, big boot. OK its not a Volvo but still a good solid car. Suspension is also very good, soaks up bad roads very well indeed. New model just on its way so expect prices to soften a bit.

Thanks everyone, not sure what to do now, probably keep hold of the S40 for a bit as Laura has mentioned changing the caravan for a bigger, more family friendly outfit and I don't think we'll get what we want under 3500kgs gvw so I might put myself through a B+E test and pick up and older XC70 or XC90 purely as a towing car. Would say I'd use a banger for work but why when the S40 is so nice and only owes me £2.5k, with say £4-5k spent on an XC70/90 around say an 04 plate sort of thing to pull a bigger caravan?

Damn my long commute, won't be for much longer, we're moving in a couple of years towards Chester as Laura wants to go back to uni after baba is born and seeing as I work in Prestatyn, it's much closer from there than from where we are now, so less MPG isn't so much of a problem then so I could have myslef a nice new shape XC70 and sod the MPG, it won't matter as much haha.

Decisions decisions, bloody women, wish she'd make her mind up

Additional road tax, MOT, insurance, etc will rapidly rack up far more extra cost than the fuel of a single all purpose vehicle.

Perhaps the answer lies in looking upwards? The XC60 is much closer in length to the V60 than the longer V70. It enjoys a reputation as an excellent towing vehicle, and the 2.4 175bhp engine drivE models are hovering around just above your budget at this moment. The higher position and visibility might please Laura, and certainly the higher seating will make installing Child 1.0 into car seat much less of a strain.

Now, to address your performance concerns... that engine can be Polestarred up to 195bhp. In that tune it's offering up 450Nm of torque across a wide range, so should feel very much on a par with a D5 the vast majority of the time.

Stop it, stop it, stop it you bad bad man!!!!

If I blow our new home deposit on a nice XC60 it'll be all your fault :P

In all seriousness I have no idea what I'm doing anymore lol Will keep my eyes peeled for the first of the £8k XC60's though, see what's what with them, but my interest will always wonder to a Freelander 2 with that size motor (don't kill me please) but I'm sure the XC has the means to swing me back lol

The freeloader is the same oily bits as the XC60 - they share much of their suspension and the drivetrain in the AWD variants. In fact, the freeloader also used the volvo 3.2 inline 6. However, the diesels in the LR are the ford/PSA units, particularly the 2.2 litre unit.

The main difference between the XC60 and the LR is that the XC doesn't quite have the same tendency for bits to fall off...

Edit: Of course, should you blow the house deposit on it, you could always live in the XC60

Hmm, when I was buying my car I was looking at an £8k budget. However I made the mistake of clicking on to the next page on Autotrader and saw my car for what seemed like a bargain price at £12k.

Sometimes blowing the budget is worth it!

Default Recommend a D3 V70

i was looking for a D5 V70 a few months back but went for a slightly more expensive low mileage D3 SE luxe instead. MPG was around 40 but now I changed the filter to a KN one it's getting betting MPG wise. Also the engine responds better and much nicer to drive.

Small update, nothing has changed other than Laura has lost her job as she's on a 6 month probation and her appraisal wasn't good enough. This is all rubbish and is all down to her being ill and pregnant so the question has been answered for now, the S40 is staying put and the C30 is sat on my Mums drive until she can either go back to work or is entitled to some Maternity pay so no V70 for now even though I thought I had found something worth buying, glad I didn't as we'd be stuffed!
