If one looks at the itis holding web site, it states that Garmin is one of their customers. As far as I know, the Garmin Nuvi 3790 can receive the FM TMC information. Not up to speed with Traffic Master. tem. |

Tem,
It is also confusing as Traffic Master say that they use TMC also; http://www.trafficmaster.co.uk/conte...n-devices.html We seem to have confusion with Mike saying that Traffic Master is different, yet Traffic Master saying that they use TMC. Hopefully it will get resolved tomorrow

There are two main differences that exist between the TMC provided from iTIS or Traffic Master:
1/ They both use a different set of radio transmitters within the UK 2/ The data is sourced using different methods, iTIS use the "floating vehicle data pool" where transponders fitted in Stobbart lotties, National Express coaches etc feed back real time data, Traffic master uses its road side monitor boxes (those dark blue boxes you often see attached to Motorway bridges). If you check your Garmin settings for Traffic one of the pages will list the licenses applicable to the device for use in the UK, it only mentions Traffic Master, there is no mention of iTIS Holdings from within the device - Mike |

Mike, This is one of the problems. I do not have the green icon on the map. Tools - Settings - there is no traffic icon to click on. The green icon should allow one to see the traffic map, see the traffic on route and also search for traffic. If you are correct about Traffic Master, then it looks like the it may not work until I get down to at least the central belt in Scotland? tem. |

tem, what you describe sounds like the device isn't communicating with the device, with the 3790T in the car and power applied you should still be able to see the traffic option from within settings and the associated subscriptions, the Nav unit gets this information from the RDS-TMC receiver.
With the device in the house it won't show any information about the Traffic system as its not connected to it. You will only get the green/ amber/ red Traffic icon on map when the receiver has picked up information pertaining to traffic in your immediate area and more importantly on your route, no route selected and it won't know whether you are affected by traffic incidents - Mike |

As you are 'in the know' on this subject who is that uses the mobile phone signals to track the speed of traffic? I know it is done, but they wouldn't tell me which traffic information system used the data, all I found out was that it is used a major source of data to identify where traffic jams have occurred ![]() They take the data that exists on the network which decides the transmitter that your phone links onto, this then allows them to work out the speed that the phone is moving at and consequently the speed of the traffic. Is this also used by TMC as this is also dynamic data

The mobile phone tracking for Traffic hold-ups uses VodaFone for the network, the prime user of the this data for Navigation purposes is TomTom with their subscription based "HD Traffic" although I think some other companies might be using similar style technology by now - Mike

You are absolutly correct. Before setting off to the Volvo dealership, I investigated further. With the Sat Nav plugged into its holder, I found the Traffic Icon in the settings menu. This told me that I had a Lifetime Subscription with Traffic Master UK. I could also see the option to select Traffic off/on and I could also see that it was selected to Auto and scanning. I have since checked the "Traffic Master Live map" and North of Perth, it only covers up the A96, to Aberdeen. No wonder we could not get a connection, in Inverness. At the dealership, they were taken aback, as like myself, they thought that TMC information was carried by Classic FM. We all learned something today. It also looks like Halfords in Inverness, do not know what they are talking about. I will now have to wait until my next planned trip South (Feb 2012), before I can see if everything is working. When I was at the dealership, I had a good look at the replacement TMC kit that they obtained, just in case they had to replace the existing installation and it is a modified GTM 10 unit. Great forum - the things that I have learned over the years, some good and some bad, is all worth the effort. Thank you, to all who contributed. tem. |

Mike,
Do you know if this TMC unit will work in Europe, or will it be limited to the UK. Thank you. tem. |
