Thanks Bob, that link and the link within it are really helpful. I guess ours is an early version (the car is 1990) so no dedicated ground strap, but would I be right thinking that the attaching point, front left in the photo (it looks to be brass?), is the earth for ours? If so, we'll clean that and the connection up and try that, and if that's not enough we'll make up a strap to earth it with.

ps The second photo is where the motor sits. Should the point the brass (earth?) foot sits, the lowest of the three, have the paint removed?

This is my ‘90. Easy enough to make a simple earth strap.

Does anyone know what the current draw should be when it's running?

Ours now is running ok on the single sweep and normal speed but not on high speed and intermittent. Couple of questions:

1. Is that likely to be a wire connection or dodgy switch rather than the motor?

2. Will it pass its MoT like this or do they all need to be working, as the option is there?

Thanks, C

ps Moomoo - we seem to have got away with cleaning the brass foot and removing paint where it sits, to earth it.

Is the plug and socket clean? Bit obvious, I know but doesn’t hurt to ask!😃

I modified an S40 wiper motor to work perfectly on my 240 GLT. It's significantly faster, quieter and more reliable and the whole project cost me less than £20 including the wiper motor.

A tad slow here, but we got round to trying to clean the contacts and it doesn't seem to have made a difference, still works in two modes and not the other two. But thanks Moomoo, nothing's too obvious to suggest to us on electrics :-)

If intermittent is an issue - what about the black relay under the left/passenger's footwell? They often get water in them. If you can't get a 240 one, there seems to be a few 7/940 ones around which are a different part number but seem to work.

From memory (I could be wrong) - those wiper motors have 3 carbon brushes - or at least there's a different brushes for low and high speed. I had a 240 wiper motor which only did one speed, and I found the wire had come off one of the brushes.
