I saw a Tesla S 7 seater today, that's a nice car indeed and as there is no engine under the bonnet you still have a respectable size boot.... err luggage space.
I only got a quick look but overall it was a nice car. Saw the new Volvo XC90 also and the digital dashboard and center console is cool. Overall nice car but I wasn't wow'ed by it. |

I've just been through the same dilemma,i looked at all sorts to replace my 04 XC90. Nothing came close for the price and i opted for a 59 plate one owner with 44k miles on it. Full history and taken in px against a brand new one. Good price and barely ran in at that mileage. Felt a bit odd buying essentially the same car but feels so much tighter and being the 185bhp and six speed box drives totally different. That's 4 volvo's on the bounce now. Great versatile car.

- Less versatile interior than the XC90. The third row of seats is a one piece bench and the second row is only in two pieces (3 in the XC), split 60:40. - Reputedly the refinement, ride, handling and performance are worse than the XC. I've never driven one myself. In it's favour, it is cheap. Drivethedeal will supply the lowest spec SG2 LWB 7-seater manual for under £27K. |

As for the Freelander by another name, I think that is in a different class altogether, so hardly fair to compare with a car as refined as the XC90. It will seat seven though so could well be a cheaper alternative to an XC90 and you know it will be good off road.

We have a couple of the discovery sports at work. They are smaller than the 90 but very nice inside. Not had a chance to drive a new xc90 but the discovery is better than the older one (but it would be a bad thing if it wasn't). The rear seats are for kids only and there was is less boot space with them up.

My input from a family of 6!
My wife had a Sedona that served us well for 9 years, unfortunately they are cheap for a reason. Parts can be surprisingly expensive, especially when a valve lets go and destroys the head and a piston. We replaced it nearly 2 years ago with a Grand Voyager. Loads of space, much better build quality but an absolute pig to work on. I had a LWB Pajero of 1992 vintage. Absolutely fantastic in the snow, mud and wet grass environments. A bit cumbersome with very vague steering when on the road. Also not much boot space and a complete lack of performance. The new model has an awful 3rd row seat with practically no boot. The ride quality and performance is however a great improvement. I replaced it with a very early (52 plate) XC90. Apart from less interior space than our Voyager it is the perfect family car. To replace it with something that ticks the same boxes is nearly impossible. The Grand Cherokee is only 5 seats. The ML has no boot space with the 3rd row down. I haven't seen a 7 seat X5. Not a lover of Land Rover, the Disco 3 is probably the closest but as said, the body needs removing for what should be some basic jobs. The Shogun/ Pajero has terrible 3rd row seats. The Q7 is too expensive and, in my opinion, too ostentatious. So XC90 for me then. And when it comes to hybrids with 7 seats, your choice is even more limited. There is the Prius with 7 seats, but no thanks. The only decent choice here is the T8 although it is shockingly expensive.

Something worth considering, the new Ford S-Max and Galaxy are both now available with AWD. So 7 full size seats, a higher driving position and loads of room. And though there's a lack of ground clearance the potential to get you just about anywhere.
