Dick Mayo Sprint 2010
Dick Mayo Sprint Castle Combe 26 June 2010 Well it’s not long to go before my 3rd race this season, this weekend will see four VOC members competing in the same class:Iain Collinson with his S70 R, me with my 850 R, James Stainburn with his 968 Sport Porsche and Nathan Corbert 996 Porsche. The VOC Motorsport Challenge now allows non Volvo cars to compete in their own section witch is great news. Iain has had some work carried out on his S70 R namely a new up rated intercooler and reverse ic pipe work, our times seem to be closer these days so will be interesting to see how the cars compare mid way through the season. Our cars could not be more different here is just a quick list of the major differences: Iain 18t turbo/me 16t turbo, Iain manual transmission with viscous lsd/me auto slush box, Iain cone air filter/me enclosed Simota air box, Iain Ebaich springs/me Koni springs, Iain up rated intercooler/me water injection. Both of us run MTE remap, full Feritta exhaust system and IPD arb’s I prefer to race in the wet whilst Iain prefers the dry. Their is always good banter between us and a healthy friendly rivalry to get better times witch allows our skills and cars to evolve for the better. |

Results
My results for this stage of the VOC Motorsport Challenge:
Time for first run was 78.60 seconds with a 64 foot time of 2.82 seconds Time for second run was 78.80 seconds with a 64 foot time of 2.87 seconds I am very pleased with the results especialy if you compare my times to last year. Here are my times from last year: 2009 first run was 85.11 seconds with a 64 foot time of 2.90 seconds 2009 second run was 84.61 seconds with a 64 foot time of 2.83 seconds When you compare my 2009 and 2010 times you can not fail to see considrable improvement in my times, this is due to the work carried out by Tim Williams and all the advice he has freely given getting the car to where it is today. Tim has improved the performance whilst keeping the car as an every day driver with no issues at all, the car remains a comfortable every day hack and a capabale track car even with the automatic transmission. Here is a vid of my first timed run:

It was a good day, however toooooo hot! I too had improved times from last year:
2009: Timed run 1):82.86 Timed run 2: 83.46 2010: Timed run 2):80.56 Timed run 2:79.35 2010: Best 64 Feet time of the four runs: 2.68 Steve, lol! you forgot to mention the 888s! I too have to thank that master of all things in Volo performance Tim Williams who has recently fitted a RIP and intercooler to my car whilst still keeping the air conditioning! and of course MRG Chippenham who have given me outstanding support since 2008.

The tyres Proxy 888's give about 2 seconds per lap better time, they allow for latter and heavier breaking, you can also carry more speed into the corner. Tim came up with a very direct air intake system that allows better air flow The devils own water injection does not really help for such a short sprint but does help with (in theory) keeping intake temp down. Tim ported my throttle body and inlet manifold The 16t is a free stock 16t turbo that has not been fettled with White injectors instead of orange One or to other bits With Tims advice and tuning I managed to shave around 6 seconds Iain managed to shave around 2 seconds off his time from last year after having some work carried out by Tim Last edited by st5ve; Jun 27th, 2010 at 20:03. |

The very direct air intake system sounds like something close to mine, and a few other members' hearts - any pics or info on what was done, and how?!
Cheers! |
