No worries, if you're confident with the usual used car checks then a 70 series Volvo will do you proud, a big step up from what you have now :P
Try to find a pre 2001 one due to the different tax groups. £30 difference for 6 months

I know what you mean though, the bigger Volvos are like moving lounges, you feel completely isolated from the outside world.

I've had my T5 for over 4 years now and I generally average about 28mpg in mixed driving. I've been driving 'gently' recently and have managed 30mpg, I reckon on a run I could get 35mpg but probably not much more (doing about 65).
My 850 2.5 non-turbo did maybe about 29mpg on the same runs, but as others have said the later ME7 engines are more economical as I believe they also have variable valve timing. If I was to buy one for economy I'd buy the 2.4T, big engine and a lower pressure turbo for good torque low down. These are heavy cars (circa 1.5 ton), although to be honest the x40s are heavy for what they are! (circa 1.3 ton, amost the same as an 850 - my 460 was only just over a ton!). If you want smiles to the gallon, get the T5 I imagine the autos quite nice in the C70, but the manual is more fun.

TBH I'm looking for the absolute best fuel consumption possible from the range. So far it seems the 2.4T/2.4 NA are the best. I'm curious if I would notice much of a difference compared with my 1.8 petrol (VVT)

From my experience if you want good economy out of these you have to pretend theres an egg shell under the accelerator! You really do have to drive them gently to get the best out of them and you need to take it gentle until the engine warms up - as on my work run thats where a lot of the fuel goes.
By comparison if your 1.8 S40 is anything like my old 460, it doesn't seem to make much difference how you drive it, you should get 35mpg+. I think some of the figures in this thread seems rather optimistic on the side of the C70 (good luck to those that can get it though & have the patience!) I think the official figure is about 27 average for the T5 and my C70 is well cared for so I'm happy with my 28mpg for something that'll do 155mph! I'd imagine 30mpg should be pretty easy to get in the later 2.4T and 2.4 N/A. But you will still get a fair bit less than your S40 - especially if yours is the 1.8 GDI! The manuals should be more economical than the autos. Should point out that my C70 is the later ME7 if it wasn't clear before.

Mine is the Volvo (1783CC) engine at 36.2 combined/47 extra urban/25.7urban. I believe the GDis were early 40s combined. Tbh if I could get mid 30s out of a C70 on A-roads I would be happy lol and I don't blame you either, the sound of a 5-cylinder is glorious! I missed that when my mum sold on her 92 850 2.0 GLT 20V.

Mid 30s on a 40/50 min run on 60mph single carridge way should be pretty easily attainable, I used to get 33mpg out of my old 2.5 20v on hilly country A roads to my old work Economy on the motorway is where it suffers in my opinion unless you keep it to 65 or below. Yep love the sound of 5 cylinders, thats why I've now had 3! Drove a 2.0 litre petrol C30 recently and thought it was diesel at first.... embarrasing! Loved the 38mpg though.

33mpg is pretty good for a 2.5 20V. Best my mum got from the 2.0 20V 850 was 35/36mpg from memory. I'm definitely considering the C70. I still need to do my home-work and so on. I hope it is affordable enough for me though, I really like them. The T5s will have to wait lol.
