If it helps ?......i have desperately been trying to find a pic of the rear of the cams in situ
the pic is about but of course when you want it one can`t remember where it is.

Here is a pic of the special tool and you can see that the slot in the cams has to be horizontal.......but i have a feeling they are not exactly central and one slot is slightly up and the other correspondly down, i am not sure, as the whole tool does adjust but it has to hold while you tightens the cam nuts as well as in the correct position.

Perhaps as the OP has not disturbed the exhaust cam he can work it out??
If with the exhaust the slot is central then the inlet one is identical.

the last one i did.(vvt pulley and timing belt kit)on an 1800.i made the locking kit. unfortunately i lent the damn thing out to a fellow member and never got it back. how ever, when it comes to holding the engine up without the special tool, i just used a trolley jack with a decent sized piece of plywood attatched.if you have a hanes manual they have a diagram of the alternative home made cam locking tool.

If you are wanting to check the cam positions at the opposite ends of the camshafts, then both of the slots need to line up horizontal, in relation to each other ( for timing position purposes) as that is the position the locking tool holds them. If you have fitted the vvt without locking the cams, then they will almost certainly be out of position !

Finely got car sorted today had G A Tuning of doncaster came out the spark plugs where plugged up wrong coil pack on cylinder 4 goes to no 1 and 3 to 2 after it was running. It was still rough so he reset memory in cam shaft selonoid and seniority was running perfect so looks like it was mainly down to me at least it only cost £40
