They are stopping issuing paper licences each year now, to save on costs,my current licence being valid until 2016. They do not lower the cost though, that still keeps on going up!!

*in the style of Viz's "Top Tips"

To save yourself from going deaf as a result of turning up the stereo too loud so you can't hear the TV Licencing people knocking, simply buy a TV licence

Private company with no powers .

I have seen them been chased down the road in the middle of the World cup etc !

I fail to understand why they need to charge for a license these days

I would probably run as well if someone was chasing me with a machete!!

They charge so we are not inundated with adverts on TV.

Not boasting about it (well, maybe a little bit) but just to be clear: I don't have a TV licence but only because I do not watch TV. I do think that public service broadcasting is in principle a good thing and that users should pay for it. I quit TV as an experiment/test of myself and there is no going back once you get free.

I've no problem paying for the TV license. Yes, it's a pain in the arse but it funds a lot of genuinely brilliant programming - Dr. Who, Top Gear, the Life series, Blue Peter, a hell of a lot of great sport coverage and BBC news, (I know, it's not perfect but it's 1000x better than most other news channels - if you've ever had to suffer through FOX news you'll know what I mean!). I watch very little TV at all to be honest, but 90% of what I do watch is on the BBC.

Certainly enough people seem quite happy to pay hundreds more pounds annually for satellite tv which is just 999 channels of brain-numbing drivel every now and then you get a great serial from the US, which is billed at 1 hour long but is actually a 40 minute programme with a commercial break every 7 minutes oh, and they'll leave it on a cliffhanger, then the next series won't get funding for some reason and you'll never know how it ends. Great. The joys of commercial programming.

there is enough "product placement" fees etc in most programs to fund the things

the whole of TV and films these days is one big advertising

Agreed.

Some of my mates have the full Sky package and the amount of utter bilge on it means most of the time if they're not watching sport they're on the 'normal' channels (IE, the Beeb, ITV, C4 etc).
Think the top Sky package is about £600-odd a year isn't it?

TV licence is a bargain compared to that IMO.
