It looks like the connector that is supposed to fit onto the Volvo 2 fader bodge affair pictured above. I have the installation instruction somewhere, I’ll post a photo when I find it.

Well I just cut the quad off the harness adaptor and wired direct to the speaker wires

I did the same. The Volvo bodge was absurd.

It might be worth having a look at the factory subwoofer for a first-generation V40 - one of those would probably fit in a spare wheel well very neatly!

That head unit strikes me as being quite unusual - someone might be interested in fixing it up. Early cars with the low-mounted radio had a cubby hole up there, and there's also the (rare) 3-gauge panel...so if you wanted an alternative to the double head unit look...!

They aren’t very accurate, but they look nice and fill the plastic well:
