I have to say, having come from VAG cars to an XC90 and now an XC60, I find the Volvo specialists to be few and far between in comparison, and significantly less 'invested' in the cars. VAG guys are normally quite passionate about the cars and if you describe an issue they have often seen it in another vehicle so have a good starting point. Issues I've spoken to Volvo guys about are normally met with a shrug and a big quote to plug it in. Indicative of the marque I suppose mind, Volvos are generally much pricier and more likely to be handed off to a main dealer. |

I’ve done a few DIY transmission fluid changes on my Volvos and have recently bought a V60 which will be getting the same treatment on the driveway in addition to the various AWD fluid changes that never get done at main dealers. If you can get your hands on a DICE unit and the VIDA software it makes maintaining a Volvo so much easier, it’s like VCDS for VAG if you’re familiar with that? I’ll add a link to my previous V70 thread which pics and the process for the gearbox fluid change which might help. EGR wise I’ve never had issues but VIDA would be my route to diagnose if I did suspect a problem. Have a look at post #5 onwards here. Make sure you can undo the fill plug, probably a T55 torx, before you drain anything ![]() https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=302878 All the best, Stu

Thanks Stu, your thread was very helpful. I have to say, most of the VW forums have died a death sadly after instagram etc came along, so it's nice to be on an active forum again
![]() Yep, I've got the RossTech kit for VCDS, I looked at getting VIDA a couple of years back, but it all seemed a bit complicated in comparison, so never got it sorted. Cheapest quote I've had to plug in the XC60 is £135 so it's probably a good investment. In the absence of an EML, I'm going to do the gearbox oil changes and just keep driving it. If there's an issue with EGR etc it'll soon rear its head properly and then I'll see if that warranty I paid for was worth it ![]() |

The beauty of the forum is our shared experiences...less egos running wild in here too.
If wish to perform your own diagnostics speak with Matthew Leavesley at https://svdns.info/ Good luck with the sump dumps...one of the safest methods albeit time consuming.

I get that may be a distance getting there, but you're not a million miles away either. They charge for diagnostics, but I think its much cheaper than £135... I think its about £70 if I recall correctly (check with them to be sure before travelling). Both garages know their stuff, but they're usually busy... expect a week wait minimum. If you plan on keeping the Volvo for a while, VIDA will easily pay for itself... definitely a good investment. There's plenty of people on here who can guide you through what to press etc etc.
