Even noticed it on the way back from Xmas on the motorway - car still had some fuel left over after 220 miles on a £30 fill, but indicated mpg was around 44mpg on the computer.
The refineries include anti-waxing additives in winter, these tend to increase fuel consumption. Colder ambient temp also tends to increase fuel consumption for diesels. Takes about 10 miles for most cars to get up to full operating temperature (oil temp not coolant temp)

I've achieved it. That's why that was the max average mpg I listed. I am always trying to drive economical and have become fairly good at it over the years.

Also, isn't mine a euro 5? The whole euro thing confuses me

Ah I can see why now.

Ok Euro 3 was the diesel emission standard up to about 2005. The early 2005 V70 D5 "facelifts" has Euro 3 engines. The Euro 3s were really good on fuel and reasonably quick.
On my Euro 3s I can get an honest 44 mpg along A roads sticking to 60 and a heavy foot to over take.

2005 the brought out the Euro 4 engine, fuel consumption increased dramatically along with a boost to 185 BHP. Then we had the Gen 3 D5 V70 and it got worse.

2011 (well around there) comes the Euro 5, The D3 is roughly the same consumption as my old 850 Tdi. With the V70 Gen 3 still awful to this day. I couldn't afford to run a V70 D5 700 miles a week without a pay rise.
