As far as Con and Use regs blah blah are concerned anything that changes it to a greater level of tint is is illegal. MOT testers are getting equipment to measure this soon, i am told!
Coventry police received a tint master around 5 years ago & have still only got the 1, so i can't see it being issued to every MOT station. When my bro & i were building his Nova we got several windows with different tints on & took them to the local police station & got them tested, they all failed including the factory tinted GTE glass

Obviously there are different levels of being naughty.....My force uses the ACPO guidelines which say, between 75% - 50% - advice; 50% - 25% - £30 ticket, below 25% - 3points £60 ticket for vehicle in dangerous condition.
when i got stopped they measured mine at 22%, however everyone was treated exactly the same & any tint that failed had to be removed on the spot. Apparantly someone had been stopped for the tints but given an advicery notice. The following day they were involved in an accident & the office who let the vehicle back on the road was got in severe trouble for it

Unhappy Tint removal

I have been driving around for seven 7 years with tinted windows on my V70.
Being a black car it does make the car look good.
The drivers and passengers front side windows are less tinted than the rear.
I just saw the news tonight and see that police had a purge, stopping people for scrap metal.
They also showed someone having to take his film off, before driving off and commented how he got 3 points and £30 fine.
Now i have done a search on this forum on tinted windows.
I never had any problems seeing through my glass and gone through at least 6 MOT's.
After reading up on here, It looks like i'm going to have to take the film off the 2 front windows.
My question is: Has anyone on here removed their film? Was it a problem?

Hi,

That you can be fined is true.
If you have more than a 25% tint in front of the "B" pillar you can fail the MOT (if the tester actually tests for this)...
Most modern cars with tinted windows from the factory are already tinted up to the maximum permissible amount.
Add a film tint and you will be breaking the law.
That has been the law since 2004 and advisory since 2001 I believe.
Begs the question why you put tints on the front windows...

However, the usual police response is to advise you to get the tint removed. They may make you redo the MOT with this item as a testable one within 7 days to make sure you comply.
They issue a compliance order or some such thing..

You can read this:
Linky....
Or..
Linky....
Or search google for window tinting law.

Bottom line is the relevant authorities can ask you to remove your tints...
Removing the film is none to difficult and will leave only minor glue marks on the glass.
These can be cleaned off with a mild abrasive pad and washing up liquid...

Des. . .

phone your local traffic division and ask them to test your front windows ,they shouldn`t do you for asking them to check. i think the £30 fine was for dark tints on the front.

mine are tinted and they are legal too.

i checked with police and insurance company before getting mine done.

My friend Ian tints windows and does car graphics for a living. Apparently anything less than 70% light transmittence on the front 3 windows is illegal. As for the rear windows you can have it as dark as you like

Hopefully he'll be doing my 850 in the next few weeks, i'll post pics when i get it done. I'm just going to get a light smoke on the rear, less hassle at MOT time.

Pedro, loving the Mille Miglias on your picture they suit the 850 well, I thought you had Fox R4 fitted though??

Unhappy Tint off

Went to Met. Police traffic garage.
Not recommended. Got a right lecture.
I wonder wether police are human sometimes or from another planet?
Ask for a bit of advice and they read you a riot act.
Gone are the days of "if you want to know the way ask a policeman"
Today, they are ready to lock you up for being lost.
Anyway crunch was, the S2 part in the number on the glass mentioned earlier in this forum indicates glass has maximum tint.
So I managed to escape and got home and the front windows tint come off.

Before and After Pic's attached.

Just for jokes i'll introduce you to a phenomenon found in N. Ireland. Affectionately known as the 'Magherafelt sunstrip' No joke, these are real.

and if your really good...

This is the double whammy, a slot if left for at least some vision.

Sunstrips of around 20" depth are acceptable if you wish to conform. Added graphics for fictitious websites also desirable. Oh, and you need a 306 D-Turbo with modified fuel pump or a VW Bora on coilover suspension.
