As others have said, the V70 XC can be a great car (I'm thinking of getting one myself) but a good history is essential with particular attention paid to tyre replacement as uneven tyre wear between any of the 4 wheels can lead to expensive transmission problems. I've e-mailed the ebay seller for that car with some specific questions and he's not responded. It's been listed several weeks now, he has zero feedback and hasn't responded to my enquiry of 2 weeks ago so I've decided to steer clear of it. OK it will have missed some key searches for this time of year as he doesn't mention AWD and lists it as CrossFinder instead of CrossCountry but I'm not convinced. There were some far nicer ones out there about 8 months ago when I was looking but didn't have the money. Anyway, good luck with your search - the right car will come along if you're patient. Pete

As I say I believe its an early XC70........
I'm trying to track it down but living in the middle of the North York Moors I can't help but think that an AWD is the best way to go. Bigbas... Cheers for that as the others have said it's been on there forcourt for some time just looking at the temperature read out lol |

Yes that looks like a V70 XC / cross country to me, its identical to mine, apart from its an S reg with blue badge grill. Looks allright, mileage is up a bit and the price i think you could haggle that down a bit, i paid less for mine with a 100k less on the clock. Spec looks good with leather, although i think that was standard on the XC and you could add the wood trim and memory seats.
Long way to go for a car though, used to live down there, spooky its got my initials in the plate, that also means that car originally has come from Cumbria.

I've seen better ones in scrapyards.

£1795 is probably around double what the car is worth were you to try to sell it privately - and that's assuming it's in good order.
A good XC70 is a good car, but the potential for expensive problems is very high. Generally speaking, and IMHO, 4-wheel drive is over-rated. Useful if you live up a muddy track, and the car has the ground-clearance and tyres to suit. But if it does have the off-road kit it will be a horrible ride on ordinary road surfaces. 4wd gives you a marginal advantage in extreme road conditions in terms of traction, but remember that all cars have 4-wheel brakes, and that's what really counts! The most important traction / safety / economy / handling / ride / performance component fitted to every single vehicle on the road today is the little nut that holds the wheel....! Someone who owned a 4x4 once said to me that he found it useful for pulling his caravan out of muddy fields. So if your motoring requriements run to pulling caravans out of muddy fields on a daily basis, you need two things: one is a 4x4, the other is urgent access to psychiatric help! If you keep looking you will find a good 2wd V70 for a lot less than £1800. Cheers Jack |

More or less agree with cap jack, although i,m finding that my fwd toyota is useless in even slush, and the sloping country lanes are a much happier drive in the XC. My toyota has traction abs stability and all that but it still feels like a puppy on lino, so i suppose its also down to chassis design weight and all that and as volvo is a land of permafrost, with decent tyres it seems a lot of people find them more than adequate. Small correction though to save confusion the XC70 is the later shape cars introduced about 2000, the car your looking at is a V70 XC or cross country, i get a lot of confusion when ordering bits.

I don't like the sound of expensive parts altho I'm used to it in a sense as Jap parts are renouned for costing a small fortune.
Admittadly I've been thinking AWD because getting out the village has been a nightmare as of late, but then even the farmers tractor and Landy have struggled at times lol. I know Mersyside seems a long way to go but I love to drive and if I'm honest really don't mind travelling the country to find a gooden. It looks as tho the snows thawing a bit now so maybe next weekend I'll pop to those speciallists near York and see what they've got. I must admit I've seen an XC70 that looks very similar to the V70 XC in the link and thought it looked pretty cool considering the hight it sat off the road and roural looks and thats not something I'm normally interested in. Cheers for all the pointers its all gunna be a big help to me gettin the right 1 |
