The colour coding is general aftermarket , generaly it does not apply to manufacturers coolant .
With volvo coolant , they formulate it and colour it themselves . It is formulated to last indefinatly as i stated above . I have been using volvo coolant for well over 30 years in a variety of engines from volvos to racing engines, there is still nothing better on the market .. "Volvo Coolant is the only coolant adapted for and approved by Volvo and ensures continual good performance from the cooling system. The product gives very good protection against corrosion and is particularly kind to light-metal alloys inside the engine. Does not contain nitrites, amines or phosphates. The various part numbers contain the same product and the packaging is adapted to suit the requirements of different markets. The bottles are equipped with child-resistant caps. Contains ethylene glycol, inhibitors and denaturant. Technical data Color: Blue Density at 20°C (68°F): 1.12 g/cm³ Viscosity at 20° C (68° F): 24 to 28 mm²/s Boiling point: min. +165°C (329°F) pH: 7 to 7.5 Maximum antifreeze protection: -51°C

It's interesting that Volvo are very keen to promote fluid changes but when it comes to changing engine oil that has been contaminated with diesel that this is seen as ok....which is lucky as this would be a Volvo expense

I've submitted the following query to Volvo customer services:
Hi I wondered if you could answer a couple of queries being asked on a volvo drivers forum. There are questions around coolant changes. A highly experienced and respected VOC member (that's you Clan) has advised that an XC60 should not need to have it's coolant changed very often. Perhaps only after several years eg 5-10. Contrary to this, owners with cars going in for their 2 year service are being advised by dealers that the coolant should be changed over every 2. Could you advise what the official recommendation is? Additionally, should an owner want to change over the coolant via a non-volvo garage, would there be any issue, provided the correct type of MEG coolant was used? i.e. Not necessarily Volvo coolant. Thanks for any advise and recommendation you can give. Kind regards XC60 owner London

Maybe the question you should ask is:
"Why do you leave items off the 2 year service schedule that your dealers will then claim have a 2 year lifespan and attempt to charge 3 times going rate to replace?" |

i think over the past week i've been worn down into understanding this is normal practice across the industry. even if you go into a non-volvo garge and ask for the fullest service they do, they won't include either a brake fluid or a coolant change. these are always "extras". trying to argue how this isn't logical is usually met with the response, "well they're not part of a service". some people don't deal in the logic you or i do.

i haven't had any response to my questions having submitted them about 72 hours ago via the web interface. does anyone have any alternative contact details for volvo uk? i seem to remember some quite reasonable response times queries other members have made.
