The OP was asking about a V60, not XC60.

He did not specify any model, only comparison between the engines. I commented on the models I have driven.

The resulting mpg difference in the car he wants should be similar.

Out of curiosity what differnce in mpg would there be between a d4 and d5???
I still think it's better to compare a new D4 with the old D4 map five cylinder for a more direct comparison.

A V60 with a D5 is an awesome beast though. Especially with a stage 2 RICA map. No idea on mpg though. The new D4 is brilliant but you can't get an upgraded map for it. (yet)

If you can wait a while, there will probably be a "new generation" D5 engine in the S60 and V60, from the same family of engines as the new D4. My dealer (in France) thought it would come in the second half of 2015 and would have comfortably over 200 bhp.
I decided to get the D4 straightaway (last October) and find it plenty fast enough for this type of car. I wonder in fact if the drivetrain is really up to even more power; I get some torque steer when accelerating hard (e.g. away from a junction), especially in Sport mode (Geartronic). That could be more of a problem with more torque from a new D5 engine.

Default mpg

Just done my first 1000 miles in an S60 D4, and I'm getting 46.2mpg.... Avg of 29mph so a chunk of shortish runs up A roads and Mway. I was hoping I think for over 50. It's a bit lower than you would expect given the published figures, right?

My new XC60 D4 181FWD Geartronic with 2000 miles on it is giving an average 41.9 and 49 on A road commute if I'm gentle. Clearly little help as a comparison for the car you're looking at, but IMHO still says it all about how good the engine is. In terms of output v efficiency I'm not sure you will find anything materially better on the market right now.

Should easily expect 10-20% less in winter, plus if you're in traffic then I'd say you're doing well! Take it for a run up the M1 at 65mph with the trip computer screen on and see how long it takes to "recover" from first few miles

Hmmmmm I'd rather not try driving on the motorway at 65.

Certainly not in the M1 - that would get you a ticket on most of it
