Just a bit more info.

I am the guy (JI Wilson) who wrote the dismantle instructions mentioned some way above. I needed to do this because my previous car had GPS and wouldn't read the disc after I had ejected it to check on version numbers. \I never did get it working - sold as knackered!

What happens is

Your car will spend most of its life driving in the same part of the world. Henece the map system accesses the same part of the disc - usually. When the ignition is off the RTI system mainatains the Wndows CE system in memory, until the battery is disconnecetd or the disc is ejected.

Now the fun starts

To reboot the system the read head needs to go right into the centre (I think its the centre) of the disc where the boot files are stored. Because it has spent the lasy x weeks accessing the middle (ish) part of the disc the mechanism fouls up and cannot reach the boot sectors - hence no boot up. This seems to be common.

Of course sometimes cleaning the head will fix this because the mechanism is exercised during a clean.

The offer from Ipswich (above) to repair is a godsend - wish it had been available when I had the old car.

I have delibertaly bought a SE Lux without SatNav !

Having said all this - the Volvo GPS system is so crap its hardly worth getting it working - I see Aston Martin have just dropped it. It beats me why manufacturers of such a quality car allow such an abysmal system to be put in their cars.

A mate of mine has just bought a £200k Bentley. Its going back because the GPS fitted only does 4 digit postcodes. It takes 30 mins to enter a town name to start navigating.

Words fail me.
