Well I've been using my car all weekend and there is a definite improvement with the new gearbox; the car is smooth and seems to run as it should - I believe the gearbox is still in adaptive learning mode (how many miles does this take?) as it seems to be getting better and better over time with the odd couple of changes here and there.

I cannot praise Cambridge Garage Havant enough for their stellar customer service throughout the troubles I've been having. They have always been keen to sort out the issue and always made me feel welcome - you can clearly tell that they care about you as a customer. I certainly know I'll be going back there. They have set the bar for customer service for me.

If the TCM is reprogrammed, if new software is loaded for example (as has just been done to mine ten days ago) the adaptions may well be cleared from the system BUT in that case the fluid counter will be reset, the gearbox will then be driven until it is at least 65 degrees C, (Vida says) using 'W' mode is acceptable, while Vida Dice monitors fluid temp and then the 'adaptive mode' will be set by the tech and a precise system of driving and selecting all the gears, some of them repeatedly as many as ten times, until the changes are smooth. The red/amber warning light flashes each time the gear selection is accepted by the control unit. The whole procedure is spelt out in Vida. True adaption can take many miles to achieve. One authority in USA says 600 miles plus.
If the trans fluid is exchanged for new, either by sump dumps and fills, or by flushing; the same procedure should be followed.
My Gearbox AW55-80(SN?) doesn't have a W button so maybe that process is irrelevant for these models. Perhaps the process is slightly different?

Either way, as I've just done 2 drop and fills of the ATF, having to have a Volvo Tech sat in the car for countless miles to reset the box seems like it would be an expensive process, not one that I'm inclined to pursue!

Hello Mindless. How goes the new gearbox? My software update has been in a month now, about 2k miles covered and I'm still experiencing a few odd gear changes. I've spoken to Volvo and they said give it another week or so before taking it in to them, but I was wondering how you where getting on.

The aw55 is the older 5 speed box. The 6 speed used in later p2 cars and p3 cars (until the intro of the 8 speed) is TF80

Hi Andy

It's going well so far, however, I think that 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd can be a tad rough at times but I'm not sure if it's just me... It's loads better than it was and I'm hoping that the next software update it gets at its next service may improve it some more.
