Default VIDA can fix it

Hi. I had the same issue with my S80 D3 163 (2011) when moving from N-D. It was fine when the engine was cold, but properly horrendous when the car was at working temp.

It is fixable if you have a DICE and VIDA. You need to run the adaptation feature (under Fault Tracing'). Bit of a faf, but it works very smoothly now.

Sounds to me that some mechanics at the dealership have no idea what they should be doing... With the eye watering hourly rate they are charging, it is pretty 'poor', to say it kindly...

How's you box doing now? We're having a "similar" issue with our recently purchased 2011 D3: we get into the car for the first time and the first engagement of D is very smooth, but subsequent D's during that journey are harsh. It's too soon to know the common pattern of behaviour because we've spent most of the week cleaning it instead of driving it. On Friday I'll do a mixture of motorway and town driving so I'll know more then. Also, engaging R is always smooth, the thuds only happen when selecting D.

Worth adding what fluid did you have used?

2011 is a change over year (I believe 2010 JWS3309, 2011 BOT something or other, 2012 AW1).

You should have AW1 in yours and not JWS3309 (assuming yours is a 6 speed TF-80SC).

I ask the question as Volvo, following a 2011 service update ensured the correct AW1 was specified, this is not currently the case Amy’s my local dealer have raised this as an issue with ‘technical’ to get updated.

If you are using the old 5 speed JWS3309 it has a higher viscosity and won’t do the box any good.

I am not familiar with your vehicle however at the very least you need to check and check again.

Hi guys,

Well after a lot of investigating, and a software update at the dealer it has basically diagnosed main shaft oil seals and it’s booked in with Volvo to be done at a very ‘reasonable’ price next week.

And yes, as it turns out, the wrong oil was also used in the gearbox and it should indeed have had the newer gen2 oil which is the AW1. All this info is in the drivers manual.

In all honesty, when you have problems with these boxes, try and build a relationship with your main dealer as at the end of the day, they really are the ones that know what the score is with these boxes!

Good to know you're getting there! But who used the wrong oil?

Well, it wasn’t me or a main dealer!

I think I may be on a similar path to you, so will have a chat with my local dealership.

I wonder if the "1 month warrantee on engine and box" written on our receipt will cover this

Firstlyi understand Volvo DO currently list the 2012 on as JWS3309. This is incorrect and was not in earlier versions of their dealer software. I believe Volvo are currently correcting this.

Secondly all and every supplier should know that Generation 2 TF-80SC uses AW1 or JWS3324. Thirdly you can use AW1 in gen 1 as it’s backward compatible.

If you have JWS3309 (you will have) then it will exhibit end of life symptoms due to its viscosity.

I would firstly change it back to AW1 as it could very well resolve.

Incidentally you can not mix JWS3309 and AW1 at all.

I would really really double check all of this unless the work is being done for free.

If they leave any JWS3309 in I would expect problems later down the line.

All of this is my own research, I am not a mechanic so always do your own research and don’t listen to me.

I strongly disagree respectfully.
