I generally get about 28mpg average out of my 1.8(122bhp) auto, tend to fill up when trip is just over 300 miles and put 45-50 litres in, can see mid 30's on a motorway run.

Our GDi averaged about 37 and more than 40 was easily doable if you kept it at 75ish.

It compares rather well to the 27ish my alfa manages regardless of how you drive it.

Thinking about this some more and again comparing my V40 to the V70 I had last week: if you are using cruise control on motorway and have to slow down briefly to (say) 50 for traffic/roadworks, when you use the 'resume' function in the V70 it really kicks you in the back and hurries to regain the former set speed. In my V40, the acceleration under cruise control in these circs is much more moderate (and the process more comfortable). Possibly this reflects a real difference between the systems on the two cars that explains the x40's better economy on cruise control?

My previous Volvo had cruise, it was a v40 t4. This had rapid acceleration under cruise control unto the desired speed, but was then fairly spot on unless you went up/down a hill.

It always felt that acceleration under cruise control was quicker than foot to the floor! It could have been the feeling of not having full control.

Perhaps you not comparing cars which have similar performance (bhp)?

It's interesting that you get more out of your cruise with the cruise on as I found the opposite to be the case. I've never really liked cruise anyway as it makes me feel like I'm not in control.

I share that feeling. I use it only when roads are really deserted, and (by far its most useful role) for those average speed camera traps.

Definitely not the same on my 2 litre n/a. But agree about the lack of control.

Good point. I think that V70 had a bit more oomph than my V40.

I have just driven mine down to Italy where we are holidaying.

Loaded up with 2 adults, 1 large hooligan and a roofrack we were getting 34 mpg at 75mph but this plummeted to 25mpg at 85mph.

Used the turbo a fair bit going over the French / Italian Alps but speed certainly has a dramatic effect on MPG.

On my daily 12 mile commute, which is a mixture of 30-60 mph single carriage way over hills, my manual T4 gives anywhere between 29-34 mpg averaged over a tank full.

Back in March I took the car down to Disneyland Paris, and at 130kph/80mph she was averaging 45mpg fully laden on the french roads, whilst back in the UK at 70mph it was more around the 40mpg mark. I guess the French roads are flatter (in nothern France) and are made of a different material than ours.
