Just taken my V70 D5 to a local specialist after seeing an oil leak at the top left of the engine. Its the swirl flap gasket leaking. So bit the bullet and having the swirl flap replaced together with gasket and the arm. Also new injector washers next week.
£350 in parts and £150 labour. Doh! Not a great start to my Volvo experience. |

hi mattye,
Never great when you find such a costly problem to fix... What year &mileage is your V70 ? mostly it seems to be the linkage dropping off rather than leaking or wearing out, was there any signs of wear on the old flap assembly ? |

Hi Thassos,
Its a 2006 122000 D5. The work is booked in for next wednesday so can't say if there was any wear. i'll keep the old assembly and maybe put some pics up. |

probable cause of failure
hi mattye,
sounds a very similar age to mine, although my D5 has +20k miles on yours, never seen any sign of leakage on those swirl throttles tho.. would be interesting to see some pics of the old part, you always learn something.. |

Replaced mine during lockdown for exactly this reason at 150k.
When I got the car, the arm was disconnected, so I put it back with a split-pin to keep it there, but the amount of play in the rod and the oil seeping out meant it needed to be replaced at some point soon. When I had it apart, the end of the rod had loads of free play and the flaps were actually only opening half way because of this. Still not really driven it enough to get a real measure of how much improvement there is, but it does seem to be happier for it! |

Just looked at Mattye's photo in the other thread - that's very much cleaner than mine was in terms of oil spillage!!

So I had the swirl flaps replaced with no dramas. The mechanic said the assembly opened and closed fine so the only issue was the oil leak from the gasket.
The flaps looked a bit oily (as per photos) but thats about it. The mechanic also replaced the fuel filter as I couldn't undo the housing. I don't have the special tool and the oil filter strap didn't work. All in all I'm happy with the servicing I've done since having the car (2 weeks) with oil, air, fuel and cabin filters changed and both belts looking fine. |
