My 2 penneth

XC60 D5 215

Round town 25mpg absolute max (fair enough this is quite heavy traffic and short jouneys generally not exceeding 2miles each)

On a run of say 150 miles with 120 miles being motorway 20 miles being A and B roads and 10 miles urban keeping within speed limits with gentle acceleration 42mpg

Doing the same run as above driving within the rules of the road although using acceleration where needed just relaxing and chilling with air con and Hi Fi on and without the stressful feather foot coasting eco drive techniques 35mpg max

Combined over 5k 30mpg

Whilst I could wish for better fuel consumption on this I dont really worry to much otherwise I would have gone for a Kia Rio diesel at 88mpg!!!!!

Perhaps I should have judging by the reliability of our current Volvos!!

Hi, i got a c70 d5 auto 2007 with 102,000miles, i love it and although fuel costs are high and it does bother me, i get 42mpg on the carriageway and 24mpg round town which is most of my driving. i didn't buy a 5 cyl 2.4l car for economy purpose whether its a diesel or petrol, its a great car to drive.

puts a smile on my face

I have a 2006 s80 163bhp auto with Dpf. Do about 40% motorway driving and whilst I haven't accurately calculated, I dont think I'm getting much more than 35 mpg. I don't know how some people get 50 mpg but it looks like these are manual. Auto really does ruin fuel economy, but surprised it is by this much.

35MPG seems pretty poor TBH ,the 163 bhp model should be a lot better than that providing your driving fairly reasonably

I'm borrowing a 2004 S80 D5 163Bhp Auto for a couple of months.

First tank was 565miles Trip computer read 44.2MPG, 200miles of that was on Motorway, rest was mixed town and A Road work.

Actual used was 66.95 Litres which works out at 38.3MPG

Have just changed Oil Filter, Air Filter, Fuel Filter and rebrimmed tank, now going to see what a light touch on throttle and using Cruise control everywhere can achieve.

The computer on mine over-reads by about 10mpg. The best I can get out of it when doing the sums is about 52mpg (over a whole tank). 45 is more normal.

cheers

James

Ok 2nd tank, this time when filling up the car i had a 10p off a litre voucher, so the pump first went click at 63litres (which is the point i stopped on last fill of tank), i carried on brimming it to get the most of my voucher and eventually squeezed in 71 litres.

What is the official tank capacity??? I'm sure handbook says 70Litres.

This tank after the service i had mainly stuck to under 2k for the first 250 miles and was showing an average of 51mpg on display, then i had to make progress so consumption dropped to 44.6mpg on the trip meter.

546miles, first click of fill up 63 litres equates to 39.34MPG

As i brimmed it so that i could see diesel at just below angle of filler neck, putting 71litres in drops average down to 34.91MPG

Next tank i will endevour to keep under 2k revs for entire tank no matter how boring it is and see what i can achieve. Next time i will note when the pump clicks, but continue to brim it to visible level.

I would imagine this extra 8 litres (near enough 2 gallons) is how people are sometimes quoting these high figures.

Needless to say for the added potential expense of diesel problems, i'm still quite content with my 4.0litre Jeep on LPG. I would have to be doing a mega mileage per year to justify a derv.

But still its an interesting experience this economy malarkey.

Foggy i meant to ask you the other day, is yours a 6speed manual or 5 speeder??

I tend to pretty much brim mine. I certainly don't shut it off at the first click. However, I do the same every time, so it should even out. The type of motoring seems to have a bigger impact on MPG, rather than driving super-carefully. I can get north of 50mpg (calculated) without taking "special" measures...just not thrashing it, and keeping to legal speeds...provided the run is long enough, and the terrain reasonably flat. It also improves noticeably after 30-odd miles, as the oil has warmed up.

I certainly get significantly poorer figures on my commute to work. The engine doesn't get properly warm (oil-wise), and the roads are too hilly and there are too many roundabouts for the sorts of numbers you can get on a long motorway run. I've never done a whole tank (600+ miles) of that sort of usage, but it might well be below 40, possibly closer to 35. Having said all of that, the R was exactly the same. The only difference was that "spirited" driving didn't have much of an effect on that (maybe 10%?), whereas the numbers really tumble if you start giving the D5 a kicking.

Mine is a 5-speed. I'm seriously considering fitting an M66 when I do the clutch / DMF later this year. The potential economy benefits will be nice, but the main motivation is in making it feel a little more 'calm'. A true 70mph (GPS) is 2400rpm, and once you're at autobahn speeds the engine is really buzzing. Plus my M56 sounds a little tired (which I can forgive it, at circa 225k miles). I'm sure it would keep going quite happily, but it's another excuse.

cheers

James

My 163bhp D5 with 93k on clock must be buggered now, just averaged 62mpg on computer driving steady at 70mph and 35mpg at naughty speed on way back from Surrey lastnight.
