if the car runs okay with the pipe disconnected from the TCG to the turbo then albeit in limp mode and not running rough i wonder if the vnt is sticking and the squealing is that. to check if the arm or the vnt is sticking you will have to either get borrow a mitty vac and it should read 25 hg or above. or put the car on ramps with you under the car or get to see the actuator arm start the car and the arm should do a full cycle. with the symptoms that spoke about i would suspect that the problem is there.

Matt,
It is hard to tell where the squealing is coming from since it only happens when engine is under load . Could be one of a few things ( could be the turbo or the exhaust manifold leaking for example) . Oil was done during a service last year at a garage and looks ok, level is ok too. Mike, I can borrow a set of ramps and an ordinary vac gauge to visually check the vtn and check the vac pump . Thanks for your answers guys |

from the vac pump you should have 25 hg and above.tap into the outport from the TCG and you should get the same as you press the throttle less vac for you info.

Is this squealing more like a metallic noise? Does the sound is present when the car is stationary and you rev it? |

Matt,
I can't record the noise now because it only happend when the car was getting booted up through the gears (starting at about 2000 revs say and getting louder as you kept accelerating) . Unfortunately it is running so badly now that I can't get it to rev like that. It didn't make the noise when reving the engine when stationary though . I wouldn't describe it as metalic , certainly more like air being pushed through something at high pressure . Incidentally ,when the garage changed the intercooler they noticed that a clamp was missing from the exhaust pipe of the EGR ,so they ordered a new one and put it on . Could it possibly be anything to do with that I wonder? |

as far as I remember there are no clamps on EGR, just bolts which connect all the sections.
Have you noticed any change in the car's behaviour when the engine is warmer? Have you ever replaced the injectors? The older models are prone to injectors failure and you might have exposed the problem when you repaired the air leaks in the system. I would be tempted to look at the turbo first. Take off the inlet pipe and gently move the shaft. Does it move sideways only or you can slide it forward and backwards parallel to the shaft axis. The shaft play should be like in the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idzWG...HfGDs59mScU%3D Look at the shaft itself as well. Do you see any damage to the blades or the casing where the shaft spins? Have a look at this website too: http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel-engine-smoke.php There's a fair amount of information about potential problems on diesel engines. Have a look at the colour of the smoke you've got at the moment, if it changes when the engine becomes warmer, etc. Try to rule out some of the factors and narrow down your potential issues list. I must say it would be very useful to read the codes. Like the guys mentioned before - it could also be a simple problem with one of the sensors too. Matt |
