Default Anti-Skid service required

Hello all. Hope you can help me here. I recently got this "Anti-Skid Service Required" message on my 2004 XC90 T6 and took it to a volvo dealer in New York City where I live. They told me that I need to replace the DEM (differential electronic module) and it would cost $2300 to do it. These are exact words that the technician wrote on the work/service ticket:

"Customer states ANTI-SKID SERVICE REQUIRED message is ON, CEM-1A64. Differential module not showing up on network. Check power, ground and network to module, GOOD. Attempt reset of module by removing power then updating, still no response. DEM replacement necessary."

Do you think this technician followed the right steps? Could he be wrong? I honestly don't want to spend $2300 on something like this.

Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

In addition, I've had the "Anti-Skid Service Required" message disappear last week for about 20 minutes of drive. Then it appeared the next day again.

i'm sure more knowledgeable people will respond soon with regards to this, but what seem to have caused this error from occurring in some cases was a split abs ring or faulty sensor at one of the wheels.
However if there is a clear error showing DEM problems it is very well possible that there i a problem with the module. I do believe that there are companies that can repair them, rather than replace.
Have a look at this thread http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...&highlight=dem although the companies mentioned are UK based

Thank you for your response. In fact, that http://www.bba-reman.com company is also based in the U.S.. I called them earlier but they needed a part number first in order to tell me if they will be able to repair it or not. I am taking my XC90 tomorrow to my mechanic to see if he can locate the part number.

You need to get the part no using VIDA, unless you are going to remove it to find the no on it.

Default BBA - reman

I am referring to the UK BBA - reman, so not sure if they have the same knowledge skill set as in the USA. You would think they would share best practise and knowledge??

They call it the XE90 for some reason. You probably didn't speak to the right person. Try emailing them.

Is this the unit? Looks like it. Did you say it was part of the ABS system?

Hi Roy, I did phone BAA reman back and they accepted the unit for testing under duress. I paid £40 to the courier for secure delivery and £50 for the test and it came back as tested good. My local garage connected it back up for me and hay presto, i have a working AWD car again.
Not sure what the issue was, but very glad I did not listen to Arnold Clark Volvo garage and give them £1500 to fit a new DEM unit??
Rock on volvo forum

I am emailing from across the great pond (Canada). Wanted to thank you all for the poss. Just pulled my DEM off my XC90 (2.5T petrol awd), but had a small "casualty" that I was hoping somebody could help with.

My 'connectors' (the two from the DEM to AOC) got damaged on removal. I had NO idea how to remove them and kind of 'screwdrivered' them to death. They still connect, and I am thinking of using electrical tape along with a hose clamp once its rebuilt (Xemodex, amazing customer service while I was under the car!).

So, here's my question. What's the "proper" way for removing the connectors? Do you put a screwdriver at the "end" and turn it 90 degrees? (ie. where it sits against the DEM)? I put a screwdriver in the little rectangular box and pressed down, but nothing happened. Then I put one at the "end" (i.e. where the outer connector meets the cabling) and it crumbled.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
