Not sure about our ambulances, but our fast response cars - Honda CRV's and Ford focus estates had winter tyres fitted.

Kind of misses the point don't you think?

The difference in tyre compound exists regardless of the driving skill of the driver. If the drivers are not so good in snow, surely they need all the help they can get.

I don't think he has missed the point at all, you can have the greatest tyres and driver aids in the world but if you don't have the skill and knowledge for driving in snow then ultimately a driver will still get stuck.

Why? Does your other car get stuck in snow/icy conditions?

Thank you Ian. That is exactly why three Range Rovers which i think tend to be fitted with things which are supposed to help drivers in such conditions were abandoned ! If you can't drive one of those in the snow simple winter tyres on a bog standard car will make no difference.

I'm not saying all people don't know how to drive in the snow but there are a good few who don't.

It would be a bit daft for me to shell out when i haver another car that works perfectly well in said conditions.

My 940 is rwd, had no issues with it in the snow. Its wearing winter tyres though. It wouldn't be going anywhere with the summer set on though!

I remember trying with summer tyres on once and I couldn't even get traction to set off. That was deep snow and it was compacted underneath, but on winter tyres those conditions don't cause an issue with setting off.

My V70 was good in the snow to start with, you can't beat a heavy diesel engine on top of the driven wheels. However my tyres were always worn out by November so have always had fresh rubber for the winter months.
But for peace of mind I bought a set of Tethys and put winter tyres on, I have noticed more grip, where we used to live there was an incline and a neighbour (who had a petrol V70 with cheap tyres) always used to turn the incline into black ice, by powering out, once he had done this no one else could get out, not even me with new rubber, once the winter wheels were on, I could drive out with no issues, even when the incline was solid ice.
But we also have a twelve year old petrol Focus that was atrocious in the snow, regardless of the tyres that are on it, (I do buy decent tyres) have now bought two alloy wheels that are the same as the originals and put on winter tyres, its a different car! It has cost less than 250 quid to do this and has been well worth it and I have only put winters on the front.
So I have been converted, I think for the non believers, they do need to try and test, but I have to say, I will always fit them as soon as the temperature drops, remember they are for cold weather not just snow.
