After explaining the problem, which he immediately acknowleged would be a timing issue, took the car back today - a couple of hours and a profuse apology later, picked it up and took a quick blast to find all's well again!

Total cost for the job - new VVT Pulley, cam belt, oil and filter, and installing new Volvo plugs (supplied by me, bought on eBay for £8.00) - £450 (small discount for cash)....

Finally got around to disconnecting the solenoid and it has silenced the rattle. I'm now part of the disconnected club until it makes economic sense to get it sorted!!

I'd like to join the rattlers' club please. I tried disconnecting the solenoid and the noise went away, however it also put the check engine light on. The code given was P0010 camshaft position actuator, which makes sense. It drove perfectly with the light on and was still running in proper closed loop mode.

My 2002 S40 1.8 has a shocking rattle from start up when cold . I thought it was a tappet as the noise wears off as it heats up , but its getting worse and no longer sounds like a tappet, and a mate suggested it could be the VVT . How does one fix that ? is it expensive , or complicated ? I have no idea about a plug someone on here mentioned , where is the plug ? and what is it I am looking for . It seems to be Camshaft related . Thanks Adrian adrianlucky7@sky.com

Thanks to advice from Rufe at FRF my sons 1.6 S40 VVT issue was resolved.

We bought the car and the seller had put black tape over the CEL. Nice move fella. I know where you live...

Anyway, we replaced the VVT pulley at the same time as replacing the timing and aux belts. Made sense to do that. Cost for us was GBP 445 all in.

We still had P0030 and VVT rattle Took the top cover off the engine and we saw the fitter had not plugged the solenoid back in!!

MK2 son plugged in said connector, we cleared the DTC and now the car pulls in high gear at low speed again and P0030 is gone.

Just P0121 to fix now...
