I would not dream of putting supermarket petrol in my lawnmower. The super-unleadeds are great, but the "cheaper" stuff is full of ethanol which ruins rubber fuel hoses etc. Its a big problem for classic cars. For the £1 a year extra it costs me, the mower gets the high-octane best fuel so I have less hassle fixing it. Shells 98? octane had no ethanol, Im told.

No doubt about it, some cars are designed for the higher octane fuel. Nissan silvia 1.8 turbo springs to mind. If peol;e are saying its the case with performance volvos I believe them.

I understand from another forum that the supermarket petrols only just meet the legal minimum spec, with tescons being the worst, and the the major brands are all much better. Probably the same with diesel too, I certainly noticed a difference in a rented lorry between supermarket and branded fuel, the truck went better on the posh stuff.

My point was I wouldn't use Tesco unleaded in my car, not literally my lawn mower, I tend to just use my local shell or Esso for the mower.

As for Tesco 99, I've run it in a V5, 2L Turbo, 2.8I6, 3.0L V6 and now the 2.5T and I've never had an issue so I'll continue use it when I am in near a Tesco, but Esso gets most of my petrol money.

I agree, ive been putting std tesco unleaded in my T6, then did a re-fill last week with Shell V-Power, the performance, and smoothness in power delivery was far greater. This wasnt a placebo effect - it made a real difference. The only downside is ~+8p/litre.

I generally run on Tesco 99 octane and find it very good (runs notably better than on regular (i.e. 95 RON) premium brand fuel but perhaps not surprising given the higher octane rating). However, when I was down south over Christmas, I filled up with Shell V-Power (don't have many shell stations around here) and I have to say, car runs exceptionally well on this. Very strong pull across the rev range. May start taking a detour to find Shell in future.
