It is actually you that have stated items incorrectly as mention previously.

The video you linked to shows exactly what you cant grasp - putting an HID in a lens type headlamp. Protector and 'some/most' Reflectors are fine.

HIDs do not have to be fitted to Projector headlamps only.
Go look at the XC70 - same style headlamp as the XC90 but comes with either Halogen or Xenon!!

There is no bleed from this headlamp.

This is their concern Mr. Jobsworth Shadyman.

You cannot run spot lights whilst there is on coming traffic - ask your wife, she'll advise you.

I would prefer to have a correctly aligned HID car (with no bleed obviously) than a crap aligned Halogen.
The video clearly states HIDs should not be installed in non HID headlights.

Its pretty obvious what you are and what you think.

Especially if you think someone would use spotlights when there is oncoming traffic.

Correctly installed spotlights have to turn off with the cars high beam.

Just to say that whilst you might have seen plenty of xc90 with xenons in reflector housings I will bet you that they are all factory ones. Volvo only started to use the projector ones from some time in 07. The xenon hide are differen. To the halogen ones, quite remarkably so when you put them next to each other plus they are also bi-xenon which means they tilt up when you use full beams.

Not sure if it's what you meant from your post, but post facelift (2007 onwards) HIDs are not bi-xenon, well the ABL ones aren't anyway. Mine has std. halogen main beams.

My sister in laws 59 plate exec has ABL and they are also bi-xenon ones but with them the shield drops forwards to give the extra light.
Originally I thought the projector ones came with the face lift but having seen a few now that are early face lift with the older style it seems that they swapped them about a year later.

Mine are 2010 ABLs, they are not bi-xenon.

The main beams are std. halogen.

They look like this:

AFAIK the ABLs have always only been single xenon, with halogen mains.... I would be amazed if you could show me otherwise.....

Some confusion here, well certainly with UK spec'd models ... ABL according to the Volvo XC90 brochure I spec'd my MY09 SE Lux from in December 2008, actually means "Active Bi-Xenon Lights" ... which has ABL as standard in UK spec'd SE Lux models... obviously other markets and model years may be different.

It might be a mis-print in the Volvo spec sheets.

LHD and RHD ABLs are of the same design.

Just been out to the car now, heres a pic:

You can see the difference between the Xenon ABL, and the yellower std. Halogen on the main beam.

So, back to what the OP asked. Has anyone managed to fit any aftermarket HIDs without relays and without any errors?

One things for sure. No matter how bad something may be, it will have been much much worse and with lots more drama for the spammer

No ALex you do miss understand. The main beam is a halogen lamp but the dipped xenon light either moves for the older ones or the shield that produces the cut off tilts forward to increase the light.
Park facing a wall and try putting on the main beam. It's less noticeable on the ABL projectors as it increase the light but on the older ones (and our renault) the movement slightly lags the main lamp.
I would try and get a pic or video to show but the cars in Southampton and I'm at gateick for a few days.

So are we saying that the xenon element is bi-xenon, plus theres an extra halogen main beam just for ****s and giggles?
