Seem to recall seeing that one on ebay recently too, more as an ad for the upcoming auction than a listing.

Looks extremely nice for a 43 year old 265GLE, if tha't s what floats your boat then i doubt you'd find nicer looking.

Carbon fibre is something else, which is why racers use it exclusively nowadays. However, steel is still the most comfortable material to use for a bicycle frame, precisely because of its flexibility.
... there isn't much point arguing about bike frames on a car forum. What you say isn't right though, most of our pushbike frames are aluminium with carbon fibre forks, except my son's mountain bike which is carbon fibre. Nearly all of my cycling mates ride all carbon fibre (road) bikes - they think I'm a little quaint for still having an aluminium frame. It would be a little difficult to buy a serious road bike without an carbon fibre frame and fork these days - and these aren't expensive race bikes, anything from about a grand upwards.

Anyway, there is no point arguing about pushbike frames.

New photos, with junk removed.
... it sold previously at £2,100 on 29 March and £1,290 on 9 April. The seller appears to be either very unfortunate or guilty of shill bidding that keeps backfiring. I wish him/her good fortune this time round.

... you might find an Amazon (or similar 1960s motor car) much easier to live with than a pre-war one Steve, that is all. I thought about my similar whim about getting a pre-war car yesterday and remembered how little fun non-synchromesh gearboxes, 3 speeders, 6 volt electrics and mechanically operated brakes were - and quickly came to my senses.

Is there somewhere you could try driving a pre-war motor car (or maybe even rent one for a weekend) to see if the dream is as you expect it to be?

Good fortune

Just to rub it in, the handlebars are on the wrong side too!

Also the seller appears misinformed, Volvo introduced fuel injection on the 145 much earlier than 1975 so it's not quite as rare as he thinks.

Assuming it's the B20E (and not the B20F which was i think 115bhp) then it should have 135bhp and be quite a lively wee beastie. Too many things would put me off this one, not least the price!

Blimey Bob,

I know you’ve mentioned cars are pricey your side of the water, but the vendors, perhaps being a tad ambitious with the asking price??? And absolutely no offers😱

I think the phrase" a neck like a jockeys b%££%&" is apt in such circumstances.

Hi Alan,

You also forgot to mention vacuum wipers, that slow virtually to a standstill on an incline, it does highlight just how much technology has improved over the decades.

I did have a 15 min chat with the vendor yesterday afternoon, seemed genuine and trades as Fergusons Classic Cars & Auto Jumble, eBay feedback is good, and other items are mostly all parts. He bought it locally from a Morris specialist around 3-4 months ago, who apparently had known/serviced it for 30 + years.

Replacement engine is sort of a positive, so it's not got the older type of white metal bearings, that I believe are expensive to get redone. Downside is that it didn't get the later series E gearbox at the same time, as this would have given a much better 4 speeds with syncro on top 3 gears.

Paint is main thing letting it down, and he openly admitted wings had been brush painted in the past, and seemed to have had something allowed to settle on bonnet top as blotchy dots on close inspection.

Anyway, I've decided to wait and double check that my pension lump sum that I'm expecting actually arrives at the end of this month, as whilst I could buy it today without too much hardship, a delay would perhaps scupper plans for workshop etc.

If funds all arrive as hoped, and vehicle is still available, I have found a local source of van based car transporter with winch etc. for a rather acceptable £125/day inclusive of VAT and 200 miles /day with extra at 12p / mile. Could be a nice 2 day trip to view, and do the deal.

Cheers
Steve

That is very candid Steve.

I never like to sail too close to the wind; if it was me (and I know, it isn’t) I’d get one thing done at a time. First get the retirement finances secured, then the garage - without that you can’t really keep classic cars, after that find a nice Amazon or 145 VWW (maybe as an 18 month long running and riding project). After all that - and in 3 years time - if you still have an itch for a pre-war motor car then indulge yourself (they will be cheaper by then).

Good fortune
