I too am looking forward to you doing this job. Plenty of pictures right?

Nothing exciting and I didn't have much time tonight to spend on the panel but I made a start on the trial lower repair panel for the spare rear lower tailgate that I have. The steel I had easily available was only a metre wide so not quite wide enough to do the full lower section width. I wheeled it up in my English wheel that I made, so it curves in both directions and sits on the old tailgate without rocking so the curve is correct. Next I'll have a go at turning the bottom edge.

Also started teaching Nick to mig weld so he can do a bit of practice on that but is picking it well and came up with a bit of a plan for doing some repairs for Dave's Amazon. It's nice to be back in the workshop but I still have the gazebo to finish off this weekend hopefully before I can be back playing in the workshop proper....

My mate Darren and I came up with the design, then Darren drew it in autocad, had it laser cut and then I welded it all together so I should say my English wheel Darren and I made.

I used my swagger to turn the edge tonight as well which I made from modifying a cheapo one. I have a stairlift motor/gearbox which I plan to use to motorise the swagger in the near future but it works okay as is now. I'm going to make a piece to fit the full width of the tailgate so this one is just a test to see how well it turns out. I spent most of the night working on Dave's Amazon but a couple of pics to show how it is going.

Looking good! If you haven't already discovered this, it is worth noting that the shape of the Amazon tailgate isn't symmetrical. When measured, the curvature doesn't match side to side, but is not otherwise noticeable to the eye. My metalwork guru and I realised this when my tailgate was repaired the other year.

Although, with equipment like yours, would it not be easier & neater to make a completely new skin for panel? Thus no potential issues relating to heat distortion when welding in a repair section?

I thought about making a whole skin but didn't think it was required. It would be a good little challenge and a learning experience so maybe I should give it a go.

I'm going to give it a go and obviously if it doesn't turn out I was always just making a repair panel. ;-)

Dave and Nick cracked on stripping the underseal tonight of the OS inner front wing while I did some welding for Dave, team work, although I think I had the better deal. No pics yet.
