Update:
removed and cleaned all the pieces of the handbrakes today. Checked one more time the brake shoes: they are in great condition, TRW brand. Replaced a rear wheel bearing. Just preventive maintenance (had a second hand one on the shelf). While doing this work I checked the handbrake cables. Pulled them. They are sticking. Probably because of rust. Ordered a pair of TRW cables. Initially I wanted to order Ate cables but the local store's prices are much higher than the online ones, and I need the parts urgently. Hopefully will receive the cables tomorrow afternoon along with a pair of springs (for the brake shoes).

Just discovered an excellent video about replacing the handbrake cables. It is way too detailed.

Replaced the handbrake cables today. Done the preparatory work and followed the instructions in the video posted above. In the afternoon I received the TRW cables. The only difference from the Ate ones (besides they were half the price) is that the rubber sleeves (that cover the hole between the passenger compartment and the "outside" world) are smaller than on the Ate ones. Fitting these smaller sleeves were much easier than removing the original, bigger ones.
I also replaced the spring set holding the brake shoes. All in I can say that it was much easier than I thought. I think there is no need to tie the cables, you can fit them easily because you can feel them with your hands. Rechecked all the bolts. Unbolted the ones holding the caliper brackets, applied thread locker on them and tightened them to the torque specified in Vida (100 Nm front ones, 60 Nm the rear ones). Fitted all the wheels, but did not torque them. Adjusted the hand brake. There is a huge difference in the hand brake feel now. I would say heaven and earth. The old cables were extremely stuck. I was unable to move one of them by hand. The other one was not so difficult to move. Tomorrow I need to put the carpet, the plastic holders at the rear doors and the central console back. After that, if weather will allow it (it has been rainy for about two weeks, which seldom happens in the Eastern part of Europe), I will bleed the brakes. In the week end, I hope that, I will do the brake servo seal (got the replacement seal from the polish eBayer). All in all, it is not so difficult as it seems for the first sight. Costs until now: - four caliper rebuild kits (made by Autofren, a Spanish company) - Ate disks (front (made in China and rear (made in Czech Republik)) - Ate pads (front and rear - made in Czech Republik) - four Ate brake hoses (made in Germany) - 1 litre of Ate SL.6 brake fluid - 2 sets of TRW spings for the handbrake shoes (I ordered one extra just for my peace of mind in case I will have to undo the shoes some time in the future) - 2 pieces of TRW handbrake cables (made in EU) - one little bottle of thread locker TOTAL: 430 EURO.

Good that you have done it all your self, save a fortune,
Like me , I have not got cash to pay anyone to work on the car, I have arthritis in the back and hips so I can only work on the car on good days, have you now done all you need to do to the car now, it should last for years, Dave |

Afternoon all. I'm about 3.5 years into my OE 286mm discs on my S60 and as happened before I've got judder and obvious uneven wear on the disc (car had stood for 2-3 weeks and I can see the wear pattern as a result - in fact it was so bad I could hear something like clanking at first...)
I may as well get some ATEs assuming they are still OE by any other name. Any recommendations where to get them from, plus pads as they don't seem thick on the ground? Thanks. Might be interested in going 305mm btw, Autodoc seem to have them in stock at sensible (£57) money - what would be involved in this? |
