just got a 2009 XC60 with sat nav. Still getting used to it, so take a pinch of salt with my opinion.

Pros:
Destinations are installed (not so on my Nokia drive)
Selectable attractions
Traffic info

Cons (but more irritations):
Clunky interface (not touch and so lengthy to put in names etc) with some menu items quite buried.
No 3D view, overhead only.
Needing to always agree to 'terms' on startup
M25 not in database (I wanted to detour to avoid it)
No updates that I could find on the Navteq website

Cost vs standalone units has been discussed above and applies to all car manufactruers' offers (so -2 for all), but having used the Audi system (brilliant 8/10) and the BMW system (not intuitive 6/10) I would give this a 7/10.

Pretty sure there is a 3D option. You have to change the map heading (default is North is always top of screen) to get the 3D option.

There are 2 generations of the sat nav, the original DVD system and the later Hard Drive system.

The 2009 car a has the older system. No idea about the differences!!

You can get 3D on the original system if you want to use it.

This solved the problem many thanks, i had emailed Volvo and they only had the suggestion to use the re-set which did not work I think they need to get some thecnical training for their customer services people.

Not sure if this is "common" to all Sat Nav's on Volvos - but look at page 56 for the 3d set up.

Thanks for the 3D advice. I'll double check tomorrow, but the remote and the screen shots in the manual are not like what I have (MY2009). So it seems that unless I can get an update I have too early a model/version.

Do you not have the manual? If not have a look on the Volvo site for the 2009 PDF

Finally got around to double checking on the 3D (now that my company car has gone and the XC60 is in regular use). There is definitely no 3D. Not in the settings, nor in the manual. The screen shots in the manual suggested above (with the link) are not the same as my RTI.
I spoke to Navteq and they said they could not provide more than the map updates. So, does anyone know if the software can be updated/upgraded. Or is it realistic to try to get the more modern unit from a breakers?

I have just bought a 2012 V70 with the 7" screen sat nav and voice control. However because I am the second owner I don't get the map upgrades and the garage say this costs over £200 to get the map upgrades.Have you seen anywhere that is selling these discs after they have upgraded there own system or do they self destruct as in mission impossible lol
