So the dealer supposedly did ask for good will and they turned round and said instead of 10k, we will do it for 8.5k which is still insane in my opinion, side note…. When the dealer quoted me, they knew I had a warranty with warrantywise… when I told them that I called warranty wise and they told me that we don’t cover ERAD or IEM (warrantywise are useless by the way, even though I bought there gold policy), the guy goes, the original price quoted was for them…. What does that immediately tell you, they are in the business of screwing me over and have no issues screwing the warranty company

Most main dealers only "box swap" ie they get a fault code and swap out the component. There is often little in the way of detailed diagnosis. This issue is compounded when they are working on a new style of component such as an ecu or in this case an ERAD. It is just regarded as a box which needs swapping out. Your ERAD is a complicated unit of a motor and gearing. There is no way that every part of it is junk and the inverter as well. It absolutely must be repairable. The dealer however will only swap it.

In time the aftermarket catches up and develops the knowledge. Take the example of the well known ABS pump failures on VW cars. Initially the only option was to pay VW 1k for a new component. Now you can send the unit off for repair and refit it for only a few hundred. Similarly you can get airbag ecus repaired on Ducatos for a fraction of the price at Fiat. Everything is repairable and eventually the aftermarket creates the service to fill the void. Look at turbos. If your turbo fails now you would almost certainly go to a specialist for a rebuild - not pay Volvo thousands for a replacement.

The problem with the T8 is that the cars are only just emerging from the dealer network. Very very few Volvo indies have any detailed experience of SPA cars, never mind of T8s.

However. Electric motors in cars have been around for a while now and there must be specialists out there who can strip and repair them. The challenge is finding the right specialist and engaging them.

This is the route I would take, I would start looking very hard for an electric car specialist repairer.

Or of course just WBAC the car....

Surely this is a class action issue. Volvo are aware of the issue, if they weren't they would offer zero goodwill. If anyone knows a legal person has the question been asked??

Scary problems you guys are having! Not sure if this helps. I guess if the ERAD is really high mileage this might not apply. I think if I was going down the line of having pay £10k to get my 3 1/2 year old car back up and running I would seek the advice of a Consumer Rights Lawyer.

Part B: Your obligations under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (CRA)

One other thing.

If you do pay Volvo 8.5k to fix it, then the replacement parts are guaranteed for as long as you own the car.

So, yes, a better warranty on the repair than you got from new......

Wrong 😭
I've had five Range Rovers over the past 30 years - my favourite cars by miles, the original classic, a P38, a L322 and two L405s - three of them had niggly problems - two were reliable other than servicing (P38 and L405) - none of them actually broke down on me or had catastrophic mechanical failures. There's clearly a problem with ERADs and Volvo are not standing by them - not good enough.

Clearly very lucky, JLR products are renowned for poor reliability. I wonder how many ERAD's actually fail, we only hear about the ones on here, but compare with units produced?

I've had 6 or 7 Jags too from the 1980s onwards - yes some were bad but my XJR and XJ8 were faultless - 170K miles on the XJ8. an only a faulty wiper parking sensor to speak of outside normal consumables and being younger (then) I drove those cars hard. The way my XC90 T8 is behaving I suspect the ERAD is on the way out.

I suspect this problem for T8 vehicles is pretty endemic. A quick search for ERAD fail would suggest it is.

I wonder whether a motoring journalist would be interested in this(?)

Surely people would be interested to know how a brand which still rides on a reputation of reliability is actually mugging us all off on a common fault…?

It almost reads like all T8s become undriveable within 5-7 years!
