I'm baffled (again) the A5/B5 spec makes no mention of Cat or DPF yet the oil specified for my car is 0W30 A5/B5 |

Hi It needs an ACEA A5/B5 oil, the original spec was 0w-30, but 5w-30 is also fine to use and gives you more to pick from. Any of the 0w-30 or 5w-30 oils via this link are fine to use. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-803-acea...ngine-oil.aspx (check that later today or tomorrow, some things I've just noticed in the category are being corrected). Cheers Tim

Different DPFs have different requirements. Yes, most need an ACEA C spec oil, but Volvos and some others don't, so generally an A5/B5 oil wouldn't mention DPFs. Cheers Tim

So a safe bet is 0w30 shell helix? I've read that shell helix is pretty much the best oil you can buy- any truth in this??

Hi
It's a good option for it and probably one of the best A5/B5 oils. Cheers Tim

When I use your look up service for my '07 XC90 D5 it doesn't offer any Shell products. Can I assume that as long as the oil is A5/B5 it'll be fine? What is the difference/benefit of choosing 5w30 over the recommended 0w30? Thanks 👍 |

Hi
The look up generally gives a selection of the suitable oils, but not all of them. Here are all of the A5/B5 oils that we have, including a couple of Shell oils. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-803-acea...ngine-oil.aspx There are two benefits for 5w-30 over 0w-30. There are a lot more 5w-30 oils than 0w-30 to pick from and 5w-30s are generally cheaper. You need to be a little selective though as 0w-30s tend to be pretty good quality, whereas there are a fair few basic 5w-30s. As long as you are going for something reputable like the Shell, there should be no issues. Also, a 0w-30 flows faster from cold than a 5w-30, but as the UK doesn't get that cold, there is no need for a 0w oil. In Sweden the 0w makes sense though. Cheers Tim

Tim,
What would be your thoughts on using a high quality 0W40 oil for an '07 XC90 D5. It doesn't meet A5/B5, but some recommend a 40 oil for high mileage vehicles. Mines done over 100k now. |

Hi
Without the A5/B5, it's not suitable and could block the DPF. Does your car burn a lot of oil? Mileage and oil grade are not really related, you only need to use a thicker oil if there is sufficient wear to lead to higher oil consumption. 100k is not a lot for a modern engine (my D5 is on 156k with no oil consumption). Cheers Tim
