Default DPF filter and fuel economy

As a further update to this thread our car has now done 22,000 miles and has had all the software updates available, the dreaded dpf no longer comes on and the car is averaging a good 31 mpg on short journeys around town.

2.4d se 163bhp manual 2009

As a matter of confirmation - and also my twopence - I have been driving in various mixed modes for the last (nearly) 7 months and haven't noticed anything unusual with regards to DPF.

I must admit though that I haven't had a long (exceeding two weeks) period of town-only, short trips - there was always at least one 20-30 minute drive around weekend aftwerwards.

Nearly 7000 miles mostly town driving and no problems yet (fingers crossed )

Red face DPF problems

I have a V50 20D 04 model and the last five six weeks the car has developed a lack of power when putting the foot down car reverts to 2800 rpm

stopping and restarting clears issue but unless you are very slow to increase revs / speed same happens diagnostic at local Volvo dealer indicated particulate filer blocked !!

replacement cost over £250 FIX cost £0

jack up car borrow a pair of axle stands

Goggled same and came up with a fix

remove cross member at exhaust

remove unit four nuts on exhaust (2 steel gaskets ) and remove temp senor,

electrical from plug

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...0406-00123.jpg

and both small pipes no need to mark them as one is slightly larger that its mate.

I then removed unit from below the car

i blew unit out with compressed air & i soaked unit overnight in a citrus decarb solution to dissolve trapped soot,

the following morning i used a pressure washer carefully to remove stubborn carbon spent around 15 mins blowing trough from both ends.

found this u tube clip helpful

again blown through with air to clear moisture resembled in reverse test driven car is going like a rocket now!!!

found these videos very good similar principle hope this helps

I guess the grunge washed out went into the drains and on to the river to feed the fish!

All diesels need an Italian tune up from time to time.... ie take it up the motorway and run at high revs for a a couple of miles until the warning light goes off...... This works well on engines and should clear dirty particulate filters. I don't have one fitted but does it not advise this in your handbook?

Default normal re generation will NOT clear the filter.

clearing a chocked DPF filter is a little more advanced than just booting it down the motorway.

firstly the EDC ECU wont let you BOOT IT if pressures read BEFORE and AFTER the DPF don't fall into a given spec, the engine reverts to limp mode or is restricted to 2800 RPM if the above parameters are not met.

This is why simply putting the foot down wont help once the DPF has become choked and normal re generation will NOT clear the filter.

the previous post is a work around if the DPF gives you this issue

I work for a international car hire co these days, we have particulate filter problems especially on VW's in london we get about 3.000 - 5,000 miles before we have to force a regeneration, however in cardiff its upto 20,000 miles which really highlights the point about dpf fitted vehicles not liking poodling around town!!
