Well, after all the love it had been shown the V70 disgraced itself last week.

The trouble started on Monday when I jumped in it with the intention of taking my son to school, turned the key and it just clicked. Drat. I ditched it, took our 2004 Golf (Old faithful) and left it on a smart charger for the morning. The following day, it started but the battery was sat at 11.5 volts at rest, no longer really capable of holding a charge by this stage. I threw caution to the wind and did the school run, got back safely only to be met with an awful burning smell and smoke pouring out of the OSF wheel well. Good times.

No good procrastinating- Parts were ordered and turned up at the weekend...

First up- Battery. I'd taken the opportunity to upgrade to a bigger 019 Exide jobby intended for the D5 models as internet wisdom suggested the bracket could be shifted along to allow for it.

Old vs new...

The internet wisdom was correct, the newer bigger battery fitted just fine...

Next up, rusty caliper to remove. Deep joy...

New braking equipment at the ready...

And all fitted/bled up

I'm about 100 miles deep after these changes and pleased to report normal service has been resumed.

Upgrading the battery sounds like a good mod, thanks for showing that.
AFAIK the D5 has a more powerful alternator, will you be upgrading that too?

Where did you get the replacement caliper from out of interest?

Not sure if you are aware but there should be a plastic cover over the battery like this one:

Not strictly required but my OCD says it is!

Good question re the alternator, mine is 140A, which I believe is the same as the D5? Not sure though...

The caliper was sourced by my local factor, it's a new item made by 'Brakefit' (Part of the APEC group). I usually go with remanufactured calipers on an exchange basis, but this was actully cheaper. We'll see how we get on with it.

Good spot on the battery cover man, I actually realised later I hadn't put that back on- Will fit it later when time permits.

I thought the D5 alternators where 160A or 180A but I'm not sure, I'm sure Siirob would know though.

If you end up upgrading it you might want to check these guys out, they seem to have very reasonably priced parts:

^Personally- I feel that's a bit spendy, but former involvement in the motor trade means I'm pretty savvy (And tight!)

We've a place locally that will refurbish an alternator (Bearings/brushes, the whole job) for £50 with a 1 day turnaround. I'm sure most people have similar outfits near them, it's just a case of knowing they're there.

That's a very good price, does it include replacing the regulator with a quality part?

Good to know you can get the services so cheap!
Although I do really like being able to have a new part ready to fit when I remove the old one so I don't forget how it all goes back together and don't lose any parts!

It does.

I take your point re having a new part in your hands when getting stuck in, that's always nice.

Next thrilling update re my V70 recue mission- The fuel filter was changed.

I don't generally make a habit of changing fuel filters on petrol cars but I made an exception here as the old one looked to be original and quite literally 20 years old. I'd managed to source a NOS Mann replacement for under £10 vie Ebay which helped persuade me to get involved with this as preventative maintenance.

Once removed from the car it was clear the old filter was in real danger of actually rusting through! The original part looked quite different to the one Mann listed as a direct replacement....

With some amendments the new filter fitted without issues thankfully.

Next up, an ABS ring was changed as the old one had broken up and was causing squirelling through the brake pedal during low speed stops...

All pretty standard old car stuff really!

following with interest because I have the same, albeit an auto

have done some of same but most interested in wheel refurb and caliper bits in case mine go wrong (fine so far touch wood)

debating whether to get happy with sander and tw@ cans, or just pay someone to powder coat.. £250 for the latter which seems reasonable tbh for a long lasting good look. but I do respect a good DIY

I like the variable camber upgrade in the last pic
