The most simple way is: Torque relates to the acceleration, and bhp relates to the overall picture of power and top speed.

E.g. a car has a great bhp rating but very crappy torque from its engine, you can brag all day about it doing 180mph but it would take forever to actually hit that speed, thats where torque comes in and gives you a hand.

Admittedly theres more to it than that...
Err, allow me to disagree? Perhaps your wording was oversimplified? bhp is simply amount of torque over specific time. So when talking about peak figures, car with alot of bhp but low torque will hit 180mph sooner than car with low bhp but alot of torque.

Cars have gearboxes to balance this equation.

i have found that sometimes its best to oversimplify things just to help those that struggle with physics.

I didn't really have a huge amount of time when i posted the 1st answer , had spent a lot of time laughing at the willy wavers .

Really? So how come my logbook, and sales invoice, both state 'R Design SE Sport'?

After 2007/8? when the R Design was introduced, you had R-Design/R Design Sport/R Design Sport D/R Design SE Sport etc., the latter simply having additional specification over the R Design Sport.

Before this you had "Sport" and SE Sport there are a few differences between them and the R Design but essentially they serve the same purpose in that sense of being "sporty" type models.

Wow i love this chat lol. the VRS which overtook me was a diesel version and i was able to almost keep up with him thats why it was such a let down. I agree with people saying that sporty car should be a petrol. I had few bmw's like 328 and 330 fantastic engines, my last car was celica gt last shape which i could rev to 9k that was great too. But i like torque in diesels. Also god i am not saying that volvo is a sports car , safe yes , nice looking yes. thank you all for your input in this post. time to do some overtime and get money for remap .
