A cat c from nearly ten years ago is a long time. Have you been onto the dvla web site and checked out the mot history? Has it had an mot every year? I personally would not be paying the asking price for the car. If your buying to keep it i most certaily would have it properly inspected and get a full report. It just goes to show you cant always judge a book by the shiny cover! If you have any doubts walk away there will be another come along you may have to wait but it would be worth it. Good luck with the search
if he is asking £1750 now what was it worth in2002 and why wasnt it repaired? It must have had some heavyish damage to become uneconomical for insurers to repair

Myself I would be worried about the damage done as it could be structural. It would be one thing if there was a proper report history and photographic evidence of the damage and signed off repair history.
Myself I would keep looking or offer much less as to me a cat C listing is a big downer if you wanted to sell. James |

Speaking personally, the Cat C wouldn't necessarily stop me buying the car, provided it passed a VERY careful inspection. But it would cut the value in half.

It will state something along the lines of "SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED AND/OR REPAIRED VIC CHECK PERFORMED ON (date)" in the special notes on the front of the V5c.
A cat C marker can mean nothing more than a light dink somewhere, even in 2002. I have heard of cars being written off after vandals scratched a key down the side! Don't forget that back in in 2002 240s were at pretty much rock bottom value wise so even very slight damage could cause an insurer to write it off. Either way, the damage was insignificant enough for the owner to wish to retain ownership of the car and arrange repair themselves. Its not like it was written off and went though a salvage auction or anything. It will knock the cars market value, although i'm not sure how much by. Just be aware that apparently some insurance companies won't want to insure a car that has previously been written off and should it be written off again they won't want to pay much money for it.

Back in 2007 I had a Transit tipper swipe the front of my old 240 on a roundabout. Now to claim off the insurance they would of wrote it off claiming it needed a new headlight, indicator, bumper & bumper trim. In reality me and my dad fitted a new headlight bowl, indicator lense & bumper trim piece from the scrapyard coming to far less than the repair costs would be through the insurer would be of which they would of wrote it off for main dealer Volvo parts prices.
My dads 850 T5 is classed as cat C on the logbook but we know for a fact it was written off in March this year because of a scratch down the drivers and rear drivers door. The car had two good used doors of the same colour fitted and you cant even tell. On an old car a cat C wouldnt bother me but it could be a bargaining point to get it cheaper as the damage could be something stupidly small like my dads T5. On a new car then Id walk away as it could be big damage. |

hpi checks
shows the importance of hpi checks to all buyers, i would still put an offer on it if i was after one as it seems a great car, but the value of the car would not be as much, it will posiballly still be driveing on our roads long after most of the new ones of today are made into coke tins ,good luck,
