Hi
You could try a 0w-30 A5/B5 as that will get moving a little quicker from stock. Another option is to forget the A5/B5 and go for an ester based 0w-30 or 5w-30 as the ester content will cling to the metals of the engine, so there is instant protection from cold. There aren't any A5/B5 ester oils though, but as yours is a T5 rather than D5, so doesn't have a DPF, you don't need it. Cheers Tim

Hi
Sorry, hectic day here. I read that earlier and then forgot about it. I think it's suffering from the oil draining down when hot, so go for an ester oil and that will cling to the metals preventing it all from draining out. Cheers Tim

Hi
Ester based oils have a few advantages over normal oils. 1) They cling to metal surfaces, so the interior of your engine is coated with oil at all times, meaning instant cold start protection. 2) They reduce friction further than normal oils, leading to improved protection. 3) Esters make the oil more stable, making ester based oils ideal for hard use. 4) Due to the reduced friction, engines often run smoother and quieter. There are a couple of disadvantages though 1) They aren't cheap. 2) They are designed as performance oils, so do not meet manufacturer specifications for longlife servicing or low emissions. They are generally fine for 10000 miles in a year though. Here are the ester based oils that we have. http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-953-ester-synthetic.aspx Cheers Tim

I also get a noise for around a second when cold starting as well which is undoutedly pressure build related. Mines done 166500 miles. One thing I will say is of all the cars I have owned which includes an S70 T5 and S40 T4 prior to this car this is the only one which has a ridiculously high cold start idle speed! As a technician of over 25 years the golden rule was always dont rev a cold engine engine hard, yet Volvo obviously went against this. The only thing I can think of is that the engineers wanted to get the engine up to temperature quickly. |

The high revs are to heat up the catalytic converter to working temp.
