Returned the front sidelights to normal incandescent bulbs - the LEDs fitted a few months ago couldn't cope with the heat from the DRLs and ended up "winking" a blueish tint to the dipped beams as they cycled on and off every few seconds - an interesting light show and I must admit it might explain why cars ahead of me in the outside lane so readily returned to the nearside or middle ones over the couple of weeks....just a little bit too close to illegal!

Oddly they looked absolutely normal when the car passed its MOT earlier in the week.

Fitted new replacement rear shoe retaining springs, shoe tensioning springs and slide pin rubbers. Also stripped down both rear calipers and de-rusted the whole caliper body which is getting pretty corroded now with large chunks of iron falling off. All prep ahead of the MOT in a months time.

Pulled the engine and gearbox out for the 3rd and final time. first oil seal lost its spring and when I took the engine out I noticed the core plug was the wrong way round. trip to Volvo and new seal and core plug. once back together and an hours running it was leaking again. my decision was to scrap the car, wife said otherwise. new rear crank seal bought, oil seal removal tool purchased. then a trip to the internet saw me buying the Volvo tool for rear crank seal at 132 euro. pulled the 2nd seal out and the lip had folded over slightly at the bottom. cleaned up, check round crank for any burrs and the fitted the seal with the tool, it went in nice and easy. only trouble is you cant check its ok until its back together and running. if you see a big black cloud of smoke over Leicestershire tomorrow then assume its failed again. maybe 3rd time lucky.

I'll second that.

I launched a breaker bar at the windscreen after two attempts on a Golf.

Nice to know I'm not alone when it comes to frustration with Volvo et al mechanics...I usually resort to choice language and the launching of spanners at the garage floor....ultimately it does less damage and I can still use spanners unless they've bounced into the long grass!

Fitted a new fuel flap hinge. Dropped the flap and it landed butter down, scratching the corner right in view, in the process. What a stupid design those plastic fixers are. I managed to knock two of the new ones straight through with my nail punch and improvised with bits of cocktail sticks. Those of you who have done this job will understand.

Stubby stainless screws would do the job, it has struck me since, by opening up the tangs behind.
