I like castrol magnatec 10-40w , I like the idea of cold start protection, ive used in all my T5s over the years and never had a problem, I change it every 5k on the V70 which is modded and gets a lot of stick. The Mrs stock 854 gets changed every 5-10 k depending on how dirty the oil looks.
Ive found the t5s seem quiter on cold starts with magnatec! I always have a flush with every change, the cars done 163k and doesnt ever use more than 1/3 of a litre between sevices! From what I understand (not a lot) Fully synthetic is designed for real high reving engines such as motorbikes , hondas etc and normal mineral oil for older less rever lower performance engines, Fully synthetic giving high revs protection , mineral oils offering low rev protection. So for me a semi synthetic is the way to go! |

if you can explain to me why bmw of which i owned a fair few (including a e34 m5 with 200 k miles under its wheels when i sold it) should suddenly start producing engines which consume lots of oil i would be very interested to hear it, none of my bmw,s have used any appreciable amounts of oil nor does my other halfs 320 which is a year old and needless to say uses very little oil bewtween services, however if you can come up with a sensible reason why they should now be producing oil guzzlers i would be happy to stand corrected ps daft statements such as they "they burn lots of oil to get rid of the crud" wont do im afraid

As you would probably agree if you talk to someone face to face the way you explain things is different to the way you would write them down via say, this forum.
i am finding it very hard to explain myself, but basically the new bmw's from the year 2000 onwards are designed so that instead of the oil just trapping particles from the engine (i originally used the word crud liberally) like older oils did, the edge oils will collect these particles then will evaporate. Hence why they need to be topped up at regular intervals between services.Your BMWS from what you have said were all older than this. As for your wifes one year old one if it was from a dealer they would advise this. I have a friend who works in the Woods BMW dealership near me and he agrees 100% with me.If i can't believe him and also the Castrol rep who comes in to see me then what more can i say. |

i have to also add mike that i always believed dealers were trying to make cars so they were owner maintanence free...for bmw to positively encourage owner participation is bizzare to the extreme, i do not doubt for a moment your observations but if my wife was asked to top up the oil it would be in the windscreen washer jar...thats if she could find that!!
cheers mate jod

This BMW (M thing only?) would appear to be a break in period and performance usage scenario although I gather the change in marketing names and viscosity specifications by Castrol is driving a lot of BMW drivers mad. Edge being revamped Castrol oil which replaces RS amongst others. I use RS4 5W/40 in the bike as it does not disappear like Motul and others I have tried, the reason for the oil consumption in the bike is high revs 14000+ nothing wrong with the engine. That’s why only the S70R gets the Redline as it doesn't use any oil worth mentioning.

The latest customer who came in which was only a few days ago had a BMW x5 3.0 diesel, 55 plate, actually had a bottle of the oil in her hand which came with the car. She had no idea even where the bonnet catch was.But she was told by Bmw that it must have the edge oils which she moaned about due to the price and the fact that her husband had to have a litre only months earlier. The service intervals are a lot further apart on these vehicles.
