But where on earth am I going to find one of these? - My only local scrap yard hasn't had a volvo in there for years... I've been hunting..

Without a doubt, easier to give up. I've found a storage unit at loknstore which at the end of the week will have all my car tools etc in. I've got to get the house tidy and frankly with a dead car on the drive which keeps having shadows poked at it... it won't happen.

If anyone else in kent wants to have a look..

If that's the case, then look into wiring for the immo. That could be the main fault but I suggested using the T5 ECU only to confirm the fault. Check if the key-ring at the ignition (cabin) is okay or just get it changed. You are using the original set of keys, right - not a duplicate ?

Hi Guys

Well after 14 months off the road, sat on the drive gathering as many leaves, spiders, bugs etc as possible, today saw the car in the last chance saloon before i called the metal man in the morning.

After resetting the timing for the very last time (and it still being exactly the same) I bodged the basics back together and gave it a try. Nothing .. as usual. The spark had vanished, there was nothing getting to the dizzy and there was smoking from a ground connection to the coil. My neighbour eventually piped up with the idea of changing the coil. Done that.. car started within 3 turns of the crank. No idea if that was the cause all along or if its just coincidental but today the car started for the first time in 14 months!

Thank you all for your help!

What does the pulley on the bottom right with the 3 bolts visable actually do? When my engine is running that pulley sometimes stops even with the belt still going round? Then after a couple of minutes it makes a kinda click then the pulley will kick back in again. Surely thats not good for the belt? Dont know what that pulley is for?

That's the air con compressor and that is the way it works. It has a magnetic clutch which engages when the aircon should run. It's a feature not a bug

As the last poster says, air con pulley. Your aircon system should engage and disengage it as needed to cool your gas down as and when it wants. When it makes that click that you mention, if you listen carefully you'll hear the engine momentarily slow down / struggle for about 1/2 of a second until the ECU kicks in and adjusts the fuel injection system.

As for it not being good for the belt, it's a volvo design and they've no doubt spent thousands of hours designing it to cope with just that so i wouldn't worry too much - they're known for being pretty good at this engine design stuff

(PS.. why resurrect such an old thread of mine?)
