That rust alright by the look of it. It'll just be surfice rust. A wire brush would work but a wire wheel on a grinder would work better.
Can't see there being a problem with the lower brace either. The sump doesn't sit any lower by the look of it.
And no the lower brace and strut brace are intended to work together. U can run either which will be a improvement. But both will give u the greatest gain

Afraid there be holes! Recall a previous mot advisory about rust on the subframe. Hoping it's not an mot fail this time as it looks a bugger to get off, probably too much for me as ? steering and who knows what else would have to come off to get it loose.
Will probably just go with the top for now until I can get someone to have a look.

Also interested in a strut brace. Saw one of yours for the 940 that tied in with the bulkhead too?? How much for one of these??

Those ones where only one offs really, but id have made u one, but i dont own a 740 or 940 anymore. I dont have the bulkhead bit jigged so had to make that part on my car. I do have a 960 im breaking but im 99% sure there different, ie dont have the captive nut. Ill check for u though. Due to the time involved you'd be looking at about 180 for one of those.
