How on Earth do you get this damned thing off ?!
Even with the car in top gear, brakes jammed on as hard as possible, and with the aid of a 6 foot scaffolding pole, the nut still wouldn't budge. All that happened was the disc eventually just turned .

a listening stick can be something as simple as a long screwdriver or a short piece of broomhandle .
The nut is done up to 300 nm , you really have to use the special locking tool which is bolted to the pulley with the 4 smaller bolts . If you don't you will never get it done back up to 300 nm . You need new bolts and big nut too .

Doesn't sound like theres damage done to me, spend a bit of time and set the timing up right, smoke and noise can be caused by bad timing. I'd assume its black smoke?

It does not sound too bad to me ,sounds like the timing could be slightly wrong as Clan suggests it may save a lot of grief if you set timing before stripping ,in my experience valve damage sounds a lot rougher than that. Listening sick is great idea to track down source of any noise , you can buy a cheap stethoscope type thing with a long probe to touch onto manifold branches . Sounds more like timing than damage.
Good luck keep us updated, the night you were going to start it up was one of the longest nights of my life. Lol.
Stethoscope like this
